Looking for a little help... 1999 Buell S3T commuted to work today. Once done working, headed to the garage to go home. Unlocked the bars and the bike started right up then in about 1 min or so, it turns off. When I turn the kill switch off, I do not get the red light on the dash nor do I hear the fuel pump turn on. After about 15 min of scratching my head, i check the usual suspects first gas, oil, fuses and the like but still no go. With the key in the ignition position, I begin playing with the wires around the handle bars. They seem to route under the tank somewhere. Behold! I get the red light and I hear the fuel pump turn on! It starts and I gear up to get it home (hopefully) but stupid me did not unlock the handle bars. I could just kick myself!!! Now the bike is stuck here at work and I am taking a train home....What a disappointing day.... So, does anyone have any hints? The way I see this is that something is telling the system that the kill switch is on. Can this be disabled by any chance? I am guessing that I either have a faulty switch, wire or relay, right? Please help! |

Wait...why is is stuck at work...?... Because you can't unlock the steering or did you shut it back off to unlock and now won't start at all...?... There is a connector on the left side of the bike (white connector...I believe has 2 wires) that is tie-strapped to the frame just behind the fuel filter....did that connector come undone or loose...?... Take off your cover and lift the fuel cell up....I have heard of them rubbing if not routed correctly. |

The steering unlocks fine but when I got the bike to start the last time, I forgot to unlock the steering. Now I cannot get it to restart. I live about an hour from work and therefore I will need to bring some tools with me tomorrow. I will begin removing some parts tomorrow. Thanks for the advice. I will post my results tomorrow. |

Possible ignition switch from what you have told us. Will it turn over or nothing from the starter? Joe |

I suspect ignition switch as well. I've gone through 2 of them in 9 years. Good news: Bikes are easy to hot wire. Bad news: Bikes are easy to hot wire. I don't want to advertise here how to do it but if you look at any factory service manual you can trace how to do it. |

Bad_karma: I am able to turn the bike on but when it hit the red switch (kill switch) to turn it off, I do not hear the fuel pump nor do I see the red light on the dash which is normally what I see. Basically when I hit the yellow start switch I receive no response... Sloppy: The ignition switch...Please excuse the question but I don't have the service manual on me at the moment but the ignition switch is located on the handlebar, correct? I am thinking that it is either this switch, bad or loose connection. |

ignition switch is what your key goes into to turn on the lights...... |

Ignition switch is the one that takes the key on the dash panel. Kill switch/button is the one on the handlebar. |

You can hot-wire the ignition by just unplugging the harness a couple of inches from the ignition switch. Use a piece of wire to jump the three wires, I think. I just solved a similar starting problem with the discovery that a nut was loose that holds the wires on the breaker. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Ignition switch, ground connection, battery cables, battery, battery connections... |

+1 on the ignition switch. If it's like my '99 X1 you have a chrome cylinder about 1 to 1 1/2 inches long that your key goes into. There are three wires coming out of that cylinder going to a black snap connector just behind the headlight. The whole setup, cylinder to connector is approx. 8 to 10 inches long. I would bet a dollar to a donut hole that if you just wiggled that connector a bit you would get your light and hear the fuel pump kick on. I have been riding down the road before and lose everything, just goes black, reach in and wiggle the wires and everything comes back. Bothersome, yes, but you learn the little quirks and what works. Hope that's all your problem is. I still need to figure out where to put the relay in line with the ignition to keep the wires from getting so hot. |

Do you have neutral light? It could be the neutral switch. |

My switch just went at 31K ,my buddys' just went as well (unsure of the mileage) I have removed it from the dash and have the wires bent just right so it still runs. I called the service department and they quoted me $280.00 for the kit, (Ignition, steering lock, and seat lock ) that they won't split up and a 2-3 week wait. The Buell gods must have been smiling on me. I went in today to have the tech look at it so they would order the part under warranty and a miracle occurred. The tech went in the back and pulled out a dusty box that included the ignition, seat, steering, gas tank AND saddle bag latches. O.M.F.G.!! (Price on the box said $385.00 !!!!!) Last year my bike was at this dealership for a clutch bearing for six weeks that was on national back order (not their fault) and today they pull this kit out of thin air. Amazing! The bad news is I think the clutch bearing is going again. For Southern Ontario Buellers you can't go wrong with Barrie H.D. (I know they're not a sponsor, but they are having a 40% off Buell Swag sale right now) |
