I have a 2000 X1, just got through replacing rocker box gaskets and intake gaskets. I had the pushrods out while the rocker boxes were off, and all of the tranny fluid & engine oil was out for about 2 weeks while I was working on it all. I also had the cam cover off to check the oil pump drive gear. 99.9% sure I got the cams back in proper alignment but the engine started almost imediately.. I assume it wouldn't run at all with cams out of alignment. I just got her back together, and I'm getting a loud tapping noise coming from the front right side of the engine that wasn't there before. Is it possible that a pushrod isn't seated perfectly on the tappet? Or would that have caused major damage immediately? I only let the engine run 5-10 seconds because the noise worries me. Could the noise be from either tranny fluid or engine oil not circulating through yet? Should I just start her up again and wait for fluids to circulate? The oil pressure light went off very quickly just like after every oil change, but I'm thinking tranny fluid may not be circulating yet? Any ideas? |

Lifter maybe. Years back I did a top end on a evo big twin and it sat for a while waiting on parts. When I first fired it up it made a pretty horrible knocking sound from right side. Scared me pretty good. Talked to another mechanic in the shop he said hydraulic lifter bled down. He said to run it a little longer so it could bleed up. I did and everything was fine. |

Had the same situation when I installed the improved oil pump gear on my '01 X-1. I was sure the engine was back together correctly, so I wondered if one or more of the lifters had 'bled down', resulting in excess clearance. Did a gentle lap around the neighborhood, the oil pressure came backup in the lifters, all was good. The transmission oil is an entirely separate circuit, and is not involved. |

"The transmission oil is an entirely separate circuit, and is not involved." Just wanted to give the background on all the work that was done before the noise started. It sounds like a lifter on the front cylinder, but I can't be positive. I'll take her for a short test ride and hope for the best. Thanks for the tips. |

It sounds exactly like a dry lifter to me. Funny thing I've never understood. Seems like whenever i get one, it rattles and rattles no matter how long I run it. But if I shut it off and wait, they go away, no oil pressure needed... |

After a quick ride the tapping went back to normal. I've had a little valve train noise for a while now, just never that bad. |

Just a general tip when you hear new, strange noises. Grab the biggest screwdriver you have, cup your hand around the end of the grip making a "headphone" out of your thumb/forefinger, and put the other end of the screwdriver on various parts of the engine while listening to the grip. Helps narrow down noise locations like you wouldn't believe |
