Greetings fellow Tubers,

First off let me say thanks for reading this, big thanks if you can answer my questions.

I just bought a 1998 S1 lightning. It has 10,800 miles. It doesn't appear to have been through all of the recall fiasco yet. As far as I know, it's only had minor mods(V&H exhaust, K&N filter, upgraded elect. module, re-jet).

The first issue that arose was oil spillage. It appears to be leaking from the after market oil tank cap/sleeve assembly. The sleeve isn't sealed properly. The first day I rode the bike, it spilled oil all over the rear portion of the bike. I checked the tank level when the bike was good and hot, it was obviously overfilled. I drained oil until the hot dipstick reading showed oil to the bottom half of the dipstick fill mark. Oil leakage has decreased significantly, but isn't gone. Oil questions bellow.

1.Is there somewhere else on the oil tank that's prone to leakage?
2. Would RTV be a suitable fix, or will gas just degrade it over time?
3. Is there another compound that would work better to seal that metal sleeve to a plastic tank?

I've seen them leak where the well-nuts fit into the tank, and if the hose-barb fittings are loose, but that's about it.

I don't know about RTV. All the ones I've done needed new tanks or tightened fittings.

Petroliates degrade RTV!
When I got my X1 it did a lot of leaking. I chased leaks for about three months. Oil level, fittings, bad lines even a leaky shock puddling.

After lots of money and some patches of hair loss it's dry.

For sealing the gas tank the manual recommends Hylomar. I have had good success with it.

i put my aftermarket screw in oil cap housing in with jb weld. has never leaked there. right now i have a rear base gasket seep though.

Its not related to the oil tank but check to make sure that the level in your primary isn't going up. If it is then your crank seal is leaking and the bike will puke out of the trans vent, bathing the rear of the bike in oil.

It doesn't 'leak' out of the well nuts the oil just tends to gather there because of the cohesion of the oil to the plastic.

More than likely this is what happened or is happening; your vent like hose on the plastic tank is pushed in with a rubber grommet.

That grommet tens to become brittle and loose over the years and leak.

Now this part isn't available at the dealer but there is a Toro or John Deer part that replaces it. I forget the number or part but if you search for it or some one speaks up they may have it.

I just used an epoxy to seal my vent line connector to the tank before I knew about said part.

Clean off your oil tank spic and span to verify. I rode without my tail section on for a few miles to verify where my leak was coming from...

I've seen it leak at the well nuts.

The tank "well" split, thus leaking.

I do agree with spidey, though, it's probably no big deal.
