Scored an original 95 S2 WP rear shock some time back. I understand they were recalled along with every other WP shock on the Buells but looking at this S2 unit I cannot see why.
Now I know the breakage problem with the welded on shock bolt eye, but the shock I have has what appears to be an alloy base that the steel shock body possibly screws into. The shock eye is a cast or machined part of this base. No welds. Looks strong enough to me.
I really want to use this shock as I have always disliked the showa shock, but was there breakage problems with this shock also?? thanks

The original WP shock was recalled due to a failure that . . . to my suspect recall/knowledge . . . never occurred in "normal use" street riding. Conventional wisdom (based on my memory and second hand information) has that the failures were due to either corrosive (dissimilar metal electrolysis?) degradation of the shock structure at the front cap on one (both?) of two types of WP shocks used in the on the 90's era tube frames.

The Showas first appeared as the recall replacement for the mass recall of ALL WP shocks in 1999. They shortly thereafter showed themselves prone to "puking" all their fluids and providing a pogo stick ride. Later on they also began to experience structural failures at the front bolt eye. Although I have direct personal second hand knowledge of one street rider that experienced this structural failure, there is still some disagreement about whether or not there has been a "normal use street riding" structural failure of these shocks.

The leaking/puking issues were handled early on through warranty replacements . . .both conventionally and as a good will after expiration cooperation between the owner, dealers and Buell. The structural failures forced a recall. The first iteration of the recall was the SRP . . .the clamshell band-aid clamp on the rear and a flat stock, albeit chromed, bracket around the front mount. This was later followed by a sporadically implemented warranty replacement with a somewhat improved Showa which was of sufficient quality to avoid the structural issues.

I know . . .TMI

To your question . . .To my knowledge, there has not been a widespread failure/breakage problem with the WP shocks. The same thing cannot be said for the early Showas. The WP shocks are rebuildable . . .and are routinely reworked by any one of several suspension services. The same may not be true for the Showas.

The two iterations of the WP can be visually differentiated by the materials used in the collar brackets and end caps . . .the later WP used stamped steel, the earlier used machined billet aluminum. My personal preference is for the early billet equipped WP . . .and I have had two of the rebuilt and reworked by Aftershocks in California.

YMMV . . .always consider the source.
