Hi everyone,
I just bought a 2002 X1W all stock, I plan to keep it that way... needs alittle detailing but its all there and I love the look of it.

I've owned many S1's and M2's but not an X1. Besides the norm, is there anything I should look out for?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Tubers beg to be flogged every once in a while
Just be on the look out for LEO's

This is my 10th Buell and I'm really digging the new/old X1. I may leave it stock... it has a smoother power delivery than my any of the stage1 M2's and S1's I've owned. But... I may crave sholder popping torque that I'm used too... time will tell. It runs so good now... I'm afraid to mess/modify it.
Currently it has no 3k RPM sturging or starting problem. I do plan on getting a K&N stack replacement air filter. Will that make a difference?

O... I forgot to ask.. as I do with all new bikes I get... when I was inspecting the intake box, I noticed an open nipple on the bottom of the throttle body. It was pointing down. Should that be plugged?
Thanks in advance!

Plug the nipple. It's for the carbon canister which is on California spec bikes.

Thanks for the info on the nipple. Will plug and get pics ASAP.

Another question. Does the K&N make a difference than stock air filter?

Sorry, I am not sure I can follow what you are saying here.. Are the two statements related?

Sorry about that...

Two separate statements. Just curious if anyone noticed a performance difference when using a K&N air filter.
Thanks!

OK. Got it.
All I can tell you is that (in my case) adding a K&N with a V&H exhaust already in place made the mixture lean to a point where the stock ECM fuel map could not quite compensate for the difference. So I ended up with some decel popping and occasional backfire. As for performance, I couldn't tell the difference probably because I don't really push the bike hard enough. In my case, I ended up taking the K&N off and the bike appears to be happier now. I will probably put it back on as soon as I learn how to use the software to change the maps. On a separate note, I must confess that the V&H slip-on did make a big difference even for my style of riding which is relatively mild.

Thanks Kalali!... I dont ride to aggressive either... however I am guilty of the occasional roll-on first gear wheelie. In stock form... I don't think the X1 is capable of doing it. All the M2's and S1's Ive owned were not capable of that until doing a stage1 to them. ve

The X1 feels like it has more of a Ducati-type torque curve in stock form... to me anyways.

Your garage is almost identical to mine, except a Uly sits where your Triumph Tiger is...

Congratulations.. Very nice and unique color scheme.
Just wondering what you mean by "stage 1" treatment. Is that some sort of a performance upgrade "package"?
Ride safe.

Thanks guys! I think the X1 wraps up the best and worst of the tuber era. : )

My assumption of stage 1 is doing an intake, exhaust and ecm mod or jet kit.

I think stage 2 or 3 to involves engine work.

Hope someone can chime in to set the record straight.

I thought about getting the Uly but I was able to pick up an 05 Tiger with full luggage, 1900 miles for 6k. This left me with enough in my budget to keep buying/selling old school Buell's. Plus I love the contrast. The triple is silk smooth at all RPMS's... then the engine disappears after 50 mph.

The Buell (to me) has more personality and lets me know I'm riding a serious motorcycle.

I ride everyday to work and to western MA on the weekends. (100 miles each way).

Sometimes I feel like at nut... sometimes I dont. : ) Having both bikes allow me to live this motto.

I was just a tick away from getting a Bonneville T100 earlier this summer almost for similar reasons you mentioned, e.g., contrast, personality, etc. That was until the wife "intervened"...Great bikes. Rock solid.

stage 1/2/3 is referring to porting/polishing the heads

Stage 1 is usually done along with an intake/exhaust upgrade

stage 2 headwork is usually done alone with intake/exhaust AND more aggressive cams

stage 3 is for major power gain and major engine work, probably a sacrifice in low end torque, and not going to be easy to ride calmly on the street

Great looking X1W - congratulations on your "new" tuber
