Just have a quick question about placing an aftermarket filter on my '97 S3. I searched past threads and everything that I found about oil filters said to try and use a Motorcraft FL-1A. Most threads said this is a great filter and as an added bonus it increases oil capacity to help w/ cooling. So anyways I went out and got one. But I placed it up against my bike just to look and see how a much larger filter would fit on my bike, and it seemed as though the diameter of the filter is too large and it would actually hit my support bracket that hangs in front of my filter. Has anyone heard of this or is there a better filter to go with? Thanks, Mike | ||

Use the long 'Dyna' HD filter (or it's equivalent). It's the same diameter as the stock filter and much longer. Side benefit is easier oil changes... you can poke a hole in the end to drain it first before you remove it and the oil won't hit the cases. | ||

The Dyna filter is part # 63813-90 been using them on my x-1 since new. Poking 2 holes, one in the bottom to drain, one in the top for a vent helps but it still drools on the cases unless you let it drain all night. | ||

+1 on the Dyna filter, it holds more oil than stock, but less than the FL-1A. I get mine in chrome as it goes with the polished and black look of my whole bike. Guys dent the FL-1A for clearance. I won't use one as I believe the bypass spring may be engineered at a higher pressure than our low pressure pumps create. I have never heard of a problem from this, but don't want to be the 1st. If either HD/Buell or Motorcraft listed this filter for our application I would say go for it, but since they don't - the fact that it screws right on (with a dent) isn't a good enough reason for me. Some FL-1A users have had theirs come loose during operation as well. Never had that issue with the short or long HD filter. If you use the FL-1A filter, it might be a good idea to secure it with a hose clamp and spring. | ||

Walmart sells the chrome Dyna filter for a decent price. I have researched the bypass spring pressure and they are the same. I just think it looks like sh&*! Just use the dyna filter if you want a little more oil. | ||

Thanks for the help everyone. I dont think I will be using the Motorcraft filter. I think I will give the Dyna filter a try. Is the part # 63813-90 an HD part number or is that the number for the filter I should look up anywhere I go? Thanks, Mike | ||
