I know this is more of a technical thing, but I can't help but notice how this section gets more attention than the 'knowlage vault' section.

My 02 X1 has started leaking oil!

I have gone over it very carefully and found it is coming out from behind the cam gearcase, where the cover meets up to the engine. My question is, can that cover be simply pulled off so I can replace that gasket or will the cam sensor and cams not allow me to do this in a simple way?

PLEASE HELP!!! all input is appreciated!

The water you see next to the oil spots on my shock are from me washing all the oil off to pinpoint the leak. Just an F.Y.I.

You have to not only remove the ignition pickup, but also the rockerboxes and rocker plates so there is no spring pressure on the cams thru the pushrods.

Are you sure it's coming from the gasket? The oil lines are back there too, running from the tank to the pump and back again...spray it good and hard with brake / parts cleaner and go for a short ride - not long enough so the oil blows back, but enough to trigger the leak. That will really help you pinpoint it. Water-wash only spreads the oil, the brake cleaner will get you dry, clean surfaces to check against.

If you haven't done this level of stuff before...get the shop manual. Worth its weight in gold.

I've been told that taking that cover off will be a process. DAMN!

I power-washed the whole area really good to get all the spray off, it did a suprisingly good job at getting all of it off, i then took it for a short ride and came back and there was one area of the gasket where it was weeping through. even though I am positive, i find myself going back to the garage again and again to double check because I don't want it to be that gasket, I would rather it be a hose cracking.

I did however call up my regular shop in Denton, TX and they said they could do it in a day for less than $100. How the hell does that work? HAHA

If they are SURE they are talkikng about replacing that for 100... I would do it...

It sure isnt a one hour job... no matter which way you slice it...

$100 is cheap...If it's the cam cover gasket..and for $100 let them do it.

It's been my experience that the headers and muffler need to come off too. I'm guessing they're thinking "Oh that's a Sportster Motor, No Big Deal".

On the plus side, there's an updated gasket...

If it sounds to good to be true....it is!
One way or another you will end up regretting letting them touch your bike.

It is time consuming, but it is not hard.
Replace the oil pump drive gear while you are in there (although this will turn it into something like $180.00 in parts and the tool you need to lock the gears in place, but is cheaper than the alternative).

Are you sure that is where the oil is coming from? When my stock shock went south it leaked oil that looked like it was coming from everywhere but the shock. I had it in the dealers twice and they didn't catch it.
It wasn't until I started the pogoing that I realized it was the shock leaking.

As long as you're sure it's from the gasket, and not one of the oil lines back there, you might try taking a torque wrench to the gearcase bolts. Can't hurt. The spec from my 01 X-1 manual is 80-110 in-lbs.

If that doesn't work, the new gasket number for the gearcase is 25263-90D. And if the dealership will do it for $100 (guaranteed in writing) go for it, as it is a 4ish hr job. Caution is advised, as someone will have to eat 3hrs of labor...

That's a weird place for a leak to develop.

Please note that the torque spec given by Akbuell (above)is INCH POUNDS , not FOOT POUNDS.

That's a weird place for a leak to develop.

There is a 90 degree corner in the gasket that does not have a bolt nearby to both help the seal and insure gasket alignment during manufacturing assembly.

In other words, mine leaked from the same place.........

I had a drip in the same area.(on the muffler & shock) After poking around I found a vent line tucked up their. P.S. I wasn't even riding! I pulled it out in the cool morning and by noon around 75 degrees I looked over and saw it dripping.

That vent you are talking about is probably the transmission/primary vent.

Are you sure it isn't just the carb vent hose overflowing and carrying some dirt with it? Mine did that and it looked exactly the same. I was wondering where that oil came from when one night the needle failed to seat completely (left gas on) and there was gas all over the parking lot. I'd check that.

THANKS JOE, I was wondering which vent it was. Thats what I was pointing out. The vent lines run down and they are cut so far up under the bike it is hard to see. Very tight up in their!

I checked the torque on the cover bolts all at about 90 in/lbs. I had that same shop rebuild that engine about a year ago, but I doubt they will help me out.
