2004 xl 1200.When engaging first gear it sounds as if the main shaft is stll spining (gears grind),what is the most likely problem ,steel plates warped is all i can think of.I see harley oem parts around $250.00 and the after market at $100.00, any thoughts on this. Oh the clutch engages just fine and does not slip,I have not dissasembled yet.

Is this when it is cold or doesn't matter? I know on my M2 when the choke is on a bit in the morning, mine will do that if I don't stab the shifter fast enough. Otherwise just check adjustment.

Remove the SPRING PLATE from clutch and replace with two steel/one fiber ...

Adjust your primary chain to 3/4 inch on the tight spot ...

Adjust clutch and clutch cable ...

LaFayette does not say it but your problem could be caused by a spring plate that is in the early stages of disintegrating.

Spring plate failures are a not uncommon problem on Buells and H-D's, and if you catch it early, it can save you from some having to do some other repairs too.

This section of the KV will have a lot of info on the problem and preventing or recovering from the damages that can occur:
