VIN should be stamped on the steering headtube. Check the connections on your bulb and wiring and check the base of the bulb to see if the contact bumps are peened over or indented like they tend to do since they are a very soft material.

A cheap bulb can have contacts that are poorly clocked, or round in shape, that allow the bulb to occasionally break contact. Typically, these will reveal themselves because a slight twisting of the bulb with the vehicle on will cause the light to go out, or may cause inadvertent lighting of both filaments.

This twisting is not enough to remove the bulb. Just a few degrees will do it.

Most better bulbs have a oblong contacts that make contact over a wider range of rotation. This also alleviates contact clocking issues. I've seen this problem on many vehicles, but especially on vehicles that outsource things like light assemblies (As Buell does/did). I'm guessing the specs get loosened up after the contracts are signed.

I personally only use the gennie HD/Buell bulbs in any vehicle of mine that takes them.

That's where I'd start, anyways.
