So here's the deal, if I'm really getting on it and I shift from 1st to 2nd it misses second.

Here's where it gets weird though, the tranny clacks and rattles, I roll off throttle or squeeze in the clutch, when I let it out or get back on the gas - there I am in third gear!

So I'm not the smartest guy around but I know I should not be able to get to third directly from first.

Do yal think my spring plate might have died? I've heard that the rivets can come loose and bung up the tranny but this only happens on my upshift to 2nd.

I am going to have a mechanic look at it but thought I might have a few parts on hand. 21K commuter miles mostly, I'm pretty sure the clutch has started slipping too...
So I thought I'd order a clutch pack from Al and prolly the Baker shift drum too.

Suggestions at this point would be great!

if your tranny is making noises I'd get it fixed pronto, before it makes a really bad noise.

Sounds like your detent plate needs to be re-aligned

I doubt if your clutch needs replacing with only 21,000 commuter miles on it. I bet it just needs adjustment (at the clutch pack, not just the cable).

If the detent plate is OK, I'd re-adjust the shift pawl and see where I stood before I got the Baker kit (I use a Baker kit, btw).

DJ, do you think the shift kit is worth the money? maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to get it but I'd really like smoother transmission action, especially at the track and in the canyons...

The only thing that actually gave me smoother transmission action was replacing the 2nd and 3rd countershaft gears (the gears that have the engagement dogs for the 1st to 2nd shift, only $52 and $58 from a board sponsor) in the transmission. The Baker kit makes the shifts happen faster and easier, but not especially smoother, not from 1st to 2nd. The kit evens up the throws between gears though, which makes shifting more consistent. That, along with the firmly screwed in detent plate makes the kit nice to have (be aware you'll have to modify the shift pawl to work with the Baker detent plate if you get one).

I'd investigate what's going on first before I started replacing parts. I suggest a 'recon' into the primary and maybe taking the transmission out for inspection. Readjust everything on the way out and see where you stand.

Believe it or not, it's easy to work on these transmissions yourself. A tuber gearset can be out and in your hands in less than an hour. You'll need a shop manual of course and a few special tools, but nothing too expensive (or uncommon enough to borrow!).

Those clacks and rattles are shift dogs banging into each other between gears. They'll be pulverized if it doesn't get fixed. If the tranny decides to go into two gears at once then you'll really be in trouble!

The biggest problem is my bike is my only transportation right now too. Thanks Rick, I'll make sure to see the mechanic this week! Can't have it breaking down on me.

If the shift forks aren't bent really badly (you'd know if they were), the likelyhood of the transmission engaging two gears at the same time are pretty slim. Unless your trans is going from 1st to 3rd consistently, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It sounds like a shift pawl adjustment might clear it up, but the only way to tell is to do it.
