The last time you checked the oil level, was the engine hot or cold? Or, had it been a long time since it last ran? Sounds like you might have over-filled the tank.

Did you 'top off' the oil tank recently? My RS will have some of it's oil drain down into the motor if it sits unridden for a while. If (hypothetically speaking of course - I'm smarter than this) I check the oil, find it a bit low and put in some fresh oil to bring it up to the mark, it will be too full once you start it and the oil that had pooled in the crank area scavenges back in to the tank. "POP" goes the cap and it's the Exxon Valdeez!

It's happened to a lot of people at least once. Twice for some of us...

I've never experienced it on my bikes, but I've seen it.

Me too, Filled the tank to the mark without running the engine first. After a little while had oil pushing the cap out. Major mess! Iron head sportys had a check ball and spring that would allow oil to pool up in the bottom end and then blow out of the breather. Now it just blows out all over your oil tank and frame

You've overfilled the reservoir by filling it when COLD. When the oil is hot, it returns to the reservoir full of foam & air. The higher level blocks your vent tube and causes the tank to pressurize. Check your oil level HOT and keep it just above the lower level line on the stick and you will have no more problems.
