Lee (Sleez), I ran this by the boys here before but without many replies, about this breaking front motor mount bolts and this is just my opinion. I believe from my experience in the machine maintenance occupation that the stock grade 8 bolts are hardened to a point where they are more suseptable to the inhearent vibration of these motors. Grade 8 bolts are hardened to help have greater torque and therefore greater friction for connections. The extra torque is not needed or desired going into aluminum and I believe a grade 5 (three digits) is more than sufficient for this application and would be much less prone to breakage from vibration. I also like stainless bolts for the same reason as they are much more able to sustain vibration. Also as others have said loctite is highly advisable although I have safety wired mine without using it. Lets hear from some mechanical engineers out there about my opinion. Bob

Hi Bob,

It seems that the consesus focuses on the fact that the bracket itself is somehow imparting undue stress on these bolts, mostly the left one which tends to fail first and then the entire front is supported by the remaining single bolt that usually breaks the head as well and/or the bracket itself! i discovered mine before the right bolt was obviously broken and the bracket appears ok. after speaking with Al at American Sport Bike, i am pretty sure that there have not been any broken bolts/head bosses on any bike that has the "webbed" (96) or aftermarket such as the Nallin offering. Don Casto had to install inserts into his broken bosses and used some aftermarket bolts, but appears to have reused his stock bracket.

i am considering either;

a) using a new stock bracket with a load balancer i will design that spans between the two bolt holes, which would require slightly longer bolts.

b) nallin or ??? aftermarket bracket with the appropriate bolts for that bracket.

c) designing and building my own billet bracket and utilizing either stock or aftermarket bolts.

a) seems fairly straight forward, assuming i can calculate and acquire said bolts. designing and making a bracket to span the two holes is pretty straight forward.

b) rather expensive, as the nallin bracket is $230.00, i haven't found an alternative aftermarket bracket yet.

c) will require the most work from me, but would be rather rewarding, i am not in the position to make them to offer, but could swing getting one made as a "G" job here at work, to my design of course.

sweet bracket, what exact bolts did you use?

i see of course that they are SHCS, but where and what specs?

what would it take to have you make me one....to fit the thunderstorm heads of course??? maybe trade for some scrap material??? didn't think so!!! LOL

great work, i remember following that thread back then. i just can't justify $240 for a freakin' bracket when i can have one made here. but i wouldn't have to worry about the whole "G" job issue if'n you were able to help out. i could draw something up on cad and send it to you? you have cad i assume?? thanks

Xldevil posted a link to a German company that makes a brace for the front mount. I don't have a clue if it would keep the front mount bolts from fracturing, but the concept makes sense.

I got the NRHS mount and haven't had any problems... but then again, I never had a problem with the stock mount for 25,000 miles. I ride my bike really hard, too. Lots of wheelies and even a few jumps.

i found the S&S bracket at a dealer, ouch $290.00!!!

i did some research at appleton over the phone, looks like the recall was done Oct 02. so it lasted like 4 years.

still contemplating my next move.


anyone have the p/n for the 96 front mount?
