Ok i need to rant. I was hearing a slight rattle on my bike around the 2k-3k mark. I thought it was something in my primary so worried i open the durby cover and fluid, clutch, chain, etc. are all fine... So i start the bike and rev the engine and AH HA!!! the muffler.

Well I have the IDS Supertrapp, and it has served me well for over 20k miles. Around 10k miles the packing went out the muffler, so i have been running it w/o packing and 20 discs.. for about 10-15k miles. well the rattle was the set screw which holds the baffle/disc mount plate in place... it had rattled so much that a big ol chunck of Stainless around the screw had broken loose, and a stress crack started around the muffler. So w/ great regret i put the stock muffler back on till a suitable replacement is found.

I totally forgot how much quieter that stock muffler is.. VERY DEPRESSED MAN HERE PEOPLE!

DAVE can you give me a price on a D&D slip-on.

Blackbelt.
You cannot run a packed muffler for very long without packing.
The shock waves from those big cans going up and down will cause high amplitude vibration that will fatgue just about any configuration.
This includes the Supertrapp's, V&H's, etc..
Without packing, they will ALL fail.
Actually, I'm suprised it lasted 10K miles.

How about a straight pipe?

I saw a dude that had a "cherry bomb" glass pack type muffler on his S3...sweet sound -less than $50 invested in the pipe, bends and brackets. It made me feel foolish for having bought a $360 D&D for my X1.

Bob_thompson did this and has a pic in the KV.
He'd probably be more than happy to tell you more.

Summit Racing carries about five different styles for under $30. Might be the way
to go for my next exhaust. Hope this helps...

Dammit! I thought I was the first to try that.

I am almost done hacking and welding my cherrybomb.
The elbow was the hard part. Now I need a bunch of mounting tabs and a baffle support.
so far I have spent $35 not including welding gasses.

My ST IDS that was on the end of my Buell Pro Series Race Pipe has seen better days also.
I just got a Buell Race Muffler from Suburban Buell in WI.

Few mufflers last forever, and any muffler with blown out packing that isn't replaced will definitely not last forever. The ST in it's newer incarnation is a pretty decent muffler overall, I've got 20K on the ST on my S3 and it's still doing well on all counts, though it will likely get repacked the next time it comes off the bike for any reason. The mounts are still the best out there for tuber slip ons, though the D&D's are pretty robust in that department.

Seems I recall a B2Win article where the compared a bunch of mufflers, one of them being a generic cherry bomb type muffler. If I recall, it didn't fair very well in the power department. I'll have to dig that article up and report back. maybe it's my memory that isn't fairing very well : )

Well i really liked my ST in the sound department, and I am sure i am the one that put the final nail in the coffin for it by completely removing the packing. I have decided to wait till next season to get any sort of replacement for it. With the new baby 1 month from popping her little head into the world, the wife and i decided that money is better spent on her... i tend to agree.
