A couple of years ago a few buddies had the idea of an Outlaw Josie Wales shoot day.

So we gathered a half dozen Colt 1860 & 1851 revolvers, & headed to the range. Some Cowboy stuff was worn. One of the horse riding gals brought her spare saddle & stand to sit on & hold the 6 holsters.

Even at a middle of nowhere range, saddles covered in holsters is a conversation starter. While 3 of us got to loading, a target @ 25 yards was covered in balloons.

Then in turn, we sat saddle, and on timer, drew, fired, holstered, drew, fired, etc. Until all 36 balls were launched. Time & hits noted...repeat. I did mid pack, alas. But we had enough powder, ball & energy to let a few bystanders try, and a grand time was had by all.

Even the post shoot clean-a-thon was fun, with my camp shower unit providing boiling water, and the same assembly line techniques, one person disassembling, one scrubbing barrels, one frames, and one cylinders, back to assembly, oiled & ready for the vault.

The downside was the loading time. We should have set up a BBQ to fill the time.

I recommend the idea, you learn how much of a handicap they had in the old days, and how deadly the mounted Quantrill's Raiders were compared to single shot rifle equipped troops.

Note: reholster each emptied gun. They aren't semi disposable magazines, they are months salary, and you aren't going back to pick up a dropped one after terrorizing a supply convoy full of angry enemy troops.

Breach loading rifles were fielded by the Brits at Saratoga.

Time & again I point out that gun technology of a century ago, ( except red dot & laser sights, both sold by 1975, ) is functionality identical to today. And it wasn't a problem for a century.

But today, it is, therefore it's a people problem, not a gun problem.

And just as true, verified by studies and obvious raw data, is gun control laws kill people. The most restrictive laws and the most homicides are at the same places.

That's just in the U.S. The same is true if you map it on the globe. Zero gun ownership countries, Soviet Union, Burma, Cambodia, China, have by far the highest murder rate in the world. They don't list those murders as crimes, since it's the government killing it's own people. And they all lie about it.

So, gun control is by liars, for the purpose of murdering innocent civilians. No other conclusion is possible.

Thus it is your duty to oppose those liars who want to steal your rights, property, and life. It's not just self defense, it's civil defense.

I asked the gun counter person today about the walmart "no more ammo selling" rumor today. She said that they were going to stop selling handgun, .556, and 223 ammo. So, I threw another 300 rounds of 9mm in my cart.

Why don't you just buy online? Georgia Arms is consistently in the .19/rd price range for FMJ 9mm target loads (1000 count box, "canned heat"), and I found a place recently that I need to re-find that was .14/rd for 1000 rounds.

Georgia Arms ships to my door. Get home, and the Ammo Fairy has visited : )

I was looking at different ammo types in small quantities for testing out in a fairly new pistol. When I find something the gun and I like, then I buy bulk. I have a local gun store that sales bulk too. I try not to leave them out of the loop. I have found mistake sales at Wally-World in the past. You know, $55.oo stuff for $5.50. I have a toolbox full of that stuff. And some Ebay sales that were supplied from there.

That home delivery is not available everywhere, and by next year, may not be available anywhere.

You are living in a golden age of firearms, muscle cars, and rights. But those rights are being stolen from your fellow citizens as we speak. And MD isn't far behind NY in this trend.

The "universal background check" mantra? No private gun sales or gifts. The high demand to keep guns out of the hands of madmen, mean only sales & transfers to " checked" people and every gun owner on record.

And we've already had lefty newspapers publish the home address and name of every registered gun owner, as an intimidation and invitation to theft.

The Red Flag laws mean zero legal rights as police knock, knock down, you door to confiscate guns. For the safety of others, or course.

And doxxing, publishing your identity and address, children's schools & schedule, is already a growing thing. Very real.

Would you even hear about murders of the politically unpopular? But there's more to come.

Apply for a job? Good luck if you've been tagged by some anonymous entity as not PC, accused of sex crimes, or a perverted Assault Weapon Threat to Society. Blacklists.

And the current crop of Candidates is competing hard to be the most radical at promising an executive order to suspend your rights and demand you turn in all your guns before they send masked, armed men to take them...or napalm your home with a F-15.

Sure, you think that's crazy talk, but when the Vice President advised shooting through doors at unknown people, and at least 2 candidates are transracial ( pretending to be an ethnic group they are not ) and none of them will condemn communist Antifa thugs beating old women in wheel chairs, & all "support" The Green New Deal but won't vote on it...

Yup...boating accidents are a bitch.

I think they'll far outnumber dead voters who cast a ballot, if stuff like that ever comes to pass.

(cue: Red Barchetta...)

And MD isn't far behind NY in this trend.

Fully aware. We do still issue carry permits though...and I plan on keeping mine as long as I possibly can. Some folks bitch about the fees, and the testing requirements, and the logistics/paperwork...but if that's all there is to bitch about (at this point, anyway)...I can sign some papers, pay a fee, and spend some time at the range. Small price, IMHO. Not what the Founders intended (Constitutional Carry)...but better than nothing.

SIG SAUER Selected by U.S. Army for Next Generation Weapons with New Ammunition Technology, Lightweight Machine Gun, Rifle, and Suppressors
Published Date: 09/03/2019
NEWINGTON, N.H., (September 3, 2019) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is proud to announce the official award of a contract by the U.S. Army in the down-select process for the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW). The award encompasses the complete SIG SAUER system consisting of 6.8mm hybrid ammunition, a lightweight machine gun, rifle, and included suppressors. SIG SAUER will provide single-source manufacturing for ammunition, weapons, and suppressors allowing for less risk and increased capability for the U.S. Army.

“The U.S. Army is leading the world in the first significant upgrade to small arms in decades to meet the growing demands of soldiers on the battlefield. We are honored to have been selected for the Next Generation Squad Weapons program bringing increased lethality to the warfighter over the legacy weapons,” began Ron Cohen, President & CEO, SIG SAUER, Inc. “At the core of our submission is our newly developed, high-pressure, 6.8mm hybrid ammunition that is utilized in both weapons, and is a significant leap forward in ammunition innovation, design, and manufacturing.”
The SIG SAUER 6.8mm hybrid ammunition is designed for increased penetration at greater distances. Cohen continued, “using patent-pending technology the SIG SAUER Ammunition division has engineered a completely new cartridge resulting in a more compact round, with increased velocity and accuracy, while delivering a substantial reduction in the weight of the ammunition.”
The primary objectives set forth by the U.S. Army for the NGSW-AR was a weapon with the firepower and range of a machine gun, coupled with the precision and ergonomics of a rifle. The SIG SAUER NGSW-AR submission is an ultra-light, medium caliber machine gun with AR ergonomics, and chambered in 6.8mm hybrid ammunition. Features include quick detach magazines, side opening feed tray, increased available 1913 rail space for night vision and enablers, folding buttstock, and suppressor.
Additionally, the Prototype Project Opportunity Notice (PPON) requirements were inclusive of an NGSW-Rifle. The SIG SAUER NGSW-Rifle submission also chambered in 6.8mm hybrid, is lightweight and features a free-floating reinforced M-LOK™ handguard, side-charging handle, fully ambidextrous controls, folding buttstock, and suppressor.
“The U.S. Army challenged the industry to bring forward significant improvements to the legacy weapons. The SIG SAUER NGSW-AR is lighter in weight, with dramatically less recoil than that currently in service, while our carbine for the NGSW-Rifle submission is built on the foundation of SIG SAUER weapons in service with the premier fighting forces across the globe. Both weapons are designed with features that will increase the capabilities of the soldier,” commented Cohen. “The final component of the SIG SAUER Next-Generation Weapons System is our suppressor, which through exhaustively researched design enhancements, reduces harmful backflow and signature.”
As outlined in the recent award issued by the U.S. Army, SIG SAUER will deliver a complete SIG SAUER system inclusive of the SIG SAUER 6.8mm hybrid ammunition, lightweight machine gun, rifle, and suppressors.
“SIG SAUER has designed the most comprehensive solution to meet the requirements of the Next Generation Squad Weapons to enhance mission effectiveness. We are looking forward to partnering with the U.S. Army throughout this process and ensuring our soldiers are equipped for the demands of the modern battlefield,” concluded Cohen.

This was way past due.

I got an email from Springfield, they're releasing a "class leading new firearm", superimposed on a photo of a metropolis (NYC, Chicago...haven't studied it enough to ID the buildings). Tagline is "it's a jungle out there".

https://www.springfield-armory.com/fiercelydefend/ ?utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&utm_content= 76297385&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-9ya8qto6GyojC8jglbXsbmE6MB cjrmfBHyevEc4zjG5LQ-_omzWWP7qrIHSGFRmrbrgewrzmMSfs 2T2RtsRKqMLmIXkQ&_hsmi=76318812

Speculation includes it being a new subcompact competitor to the P365...which would definitely interest me. My XDs has been dead-nuts reliable for me, invisible when carrying (even in shorts and a t-shirt), lightweight, easy to handle even with my big hands, fast to get back on target, and THIN (under 1" wide). Capacity for carrying is single-stack 7+1 with a spare 8 (extended mag). I don't carry the 8 because of the increased footprint...but something with the XDs' feel and shootability, combined with P365 size and capacity?

Yeah...I can't wait to see it, if that's what it is.

I can tell you Ruger tried and failed miserably in their effort with the pistol bid.

I don't see Remington as a player with their financial issues.

Savage and Mossberg have put out some quality designs lately but I don't think they have the capacity to supply the military.

Where are Colt and Winchester with new development? I haven't seen or heard anything promising lately.

Browning seems to be fading.

Heckler and Koch or FN? Maybe they have something.

Who else is a viable candidate?

I don't see offshore manufacturing as an option. So whoever it is would have to agree to manufacturing in the US.

While I would normally chalk this up to another nowhere road solicitation like all their previous costly expenditures in M4 killing wonder weapons...they've actually built the first new Lake City ammunition manufacturing plant since their first facility fifty years ago to produce this new "hybrid" 6.8mm ammunition. So far it looks like a 6.8mm projectile in a 5.56mm case...with a stainless steel case head. I guess the M855A1 solution of wearing out guns prematurely with little gained is something they've finally come to terms with.

The performance specs for the new round are rather astounding. Knowing the hype involved in maintaining financial support for such projects...I remain skeptical. We've been doing this cartridge ammunition thing for a long time. Everything is a compromise.

FN is Winchester & Browning.

The historical roots of that are interesting. For years, the Winchester company bought every patent from John Moses Browning he brought them. Most never went into production, but it was cheaper than having the competition make guns with Browning's designs, taking business away from Winchester's production. ( of mostly Browning designs )

Until John Moses developed the long stroke recoil shotgun design that became the Browning Auto 5. He asked for royalties instead of simply selling the patent rights figuring, correctly, that this was a game changer & potential big seller. Winchester said no. So He took it to Remington, where luck had the President of Remington die of a heart attack while John Moses waited for their meeting. So... Off to Belgium, where FN had been cheerfully selling Browning designed semi auto pistols in mass quantities to governments and civilians. FN promptly created the Browning brand to cash in on his reputation, and sell the most innovative game changing sporting arms in the world. ( Remington did later produce the Browning Auto 5 under licence with a Remington model name )

It was much, much, later that FN merged with/took over Winchester.

Not every John Moses Browning design was a winner. But he was so prolific and original thinking that his designs dominate modern firearms to this day.

Peter Paul Mauser, and relatives, did develop and manufactured the bolt action rifle to it's 1898 "final form" which was copied by the U.S. with the 1903 Springfield, and the Brits with the 1914 Enfield, & the Model 1917 American .30-06 version, considered the pinnacle of bolt action combat rifles to this day. Thus Mauser overshadowed Mannlicher, Vetterli, etc. the other original, innovative designers who deserve full credit for the evolution of modern bolt actions.

Still, Mauser was a bit of a one hit wonder. After the 1898.... ( the several revolutionary and evolutionary steps before 1898 are almost only known to history buffs and collectors )

Kalashnikov gets full credit for the most produced weapon of war in history. ( fair or not ) but again, a one hit wonder. ( plus some derivative work, not generally known to the public )

Sam Colt gets full credit for a practical repeating pistol, the revolver that indexed the cylinder automatically with cocking the hammer. And... One hit.

Contrast to John Moses who designed single shot, lever action, pump & semi auto rifles, shot guns, and pistols that are the most influential if not outright copied designs in history.

Almost every auto pistol made today uses Browning's slide concept & nearly every locked breach pistol uses his tilting barrel concept.

Yeah, yeah, Desert Eagle, a few models from Beretta & HK.... Do you need both hands to count them?

FN is Winchester & Browning.

Not exactly.
While Fabrique Nationale (FN), Browning and Winchester are all under the same ownership these days (FN Herstal), each is and was a separate entity.
All three have collaborated over the years on designs but FN was and is, not just a manufacturer but also, a designer in its own right.
