Doesn't Rachel Maddow make everyone angry?

Hootowl:

The SO took some action on that and when she won, the loser's wouldn't pay up.

When we watched him announce, as Trump was coming down the escalator, she looked at me and said: "Oh my god, he's going to win!"

No one took her seriously.

The people she made bets with still have not paid up (one lunch and one bottle of Gin) and they haven't left for Canada yet either.

Meh. Go easy on Shawn. He's probably exhausted. It's not like he's pissing on it, and it looks like he stepped on it accidentally. There's obviously no reverence there (don't get that much, outside the military) but it sure doesn't look like he's intentionally desecrating it. I have other things to get worked up about.

I think the flag issue above, and the unfortunate events at the high school in Florida, boil down to one thing.

Respect.

There is none today. Anywhere. Society has bred it out. Hate. Separation. "Identity politics". Activism. All of it breeds nothing but disrespect - disrespect for the country, disrespect for other human beings, disrespect for the law, disrespect for our leaders.

They keep talking about Florida, and how people need to react better, the whole 'see something say something' mentality, and "how could we have tracked this kid better" and "what should we have done once he was expelled"...bullshit.

Teach respect for human life FIRST, and this won't be an issue in the first place.

Guns have been around for HUNDREDS of years. These types of tragedies are a new "feature" of our mainly-dysfunctional society. Ditto the disrespect for America, and the values it was founded on.

We need to start teaching some RESPECT again.

I think the problem is that kids are being told that it's normal to get "triggered" about things, and that every petty grievance, real or imagined, is worthy of national attention. So they're not learning how to cope with anger or frustration in any other way than acting out...something they should have been allowed to figure out when they were toddlers.

Riots in the streets about nothing more than that you disagree with someone, and mass shootings.

Its all become "normalized".

News this morning was talking about is. Case they made was, WWI soldiers practiced on round targets. WWII soldiers practiced on silhouette targets. Now, it's not just soldiers but KIDS who practice ("shoot people") on VR video games and tactical role-play games.

There is no stigma against taking a life anymore.

Umm, there is this whole thing called Parenting where you teach your child about right vs wrong, consequences for your actions, how to manage and cope with your feelings, etc. It aint easy ... but the fact is most parents don't Parent. They let TV, Social Media, Video Games, etc do it ... instead of taking the time and energy to do it yourself, the right way.

The Fake News piece by Sharyl Attkisson is great. The whole "fake news" movement was started by Democrats to attempt to discredit any news from the conservative press that they didn't like. Trump successfully turned the tables on them such that they avoid the term now!

BTW- Sharyl is still in the middle of a lawsuit against the federal government for when they hacked her personal computer during the Obama administration, apparently because she was investigating stories unfavorable to the Obama administration (how scary is that?). Even now, the Justice Department is fighting subpoenas from her lawyers attempting to get more information.

I think the flag issue above, and the unfortunate events at the high school in Florida, boil down to one thing.

Respect.

I couldn't agree more. I was in some required training a couple of weeks ago, presented by three social councilors in our education system. One of the graphics they put up on the screen shows several things that have changed from one generation to the next. It actually depicted a decline from four generations ago, where respect was a given, to the current generation where respect is simply ignored. They talked about the difficulties this created in schools, and on the buses. They failed to discuss, at all, the reason for this.

I know when I was a kid, if you disrespected adults in the school system, you were going to get a lesson in respect. I also see how this complete lack of respect has become, instead of something to teach, instead something that must be dealt with by the adults. Basically, we were being taught that respect is gone, and not to attempt to change that. Instead, we must learn to accept this new normal in society. This is coming from highly educated professionals in our education system, who are working with the troubled kids, and teaching adults what to expect and how to deal with it. Complete insanity IMO. Lot's of others in attendance seemed to agree with me on that point.

Sure parents are to blame. When the school system also fails to teach respect, each generation will decline in the respect given though. Then you have fewer parents teaching respect to the new generation. We have actually come to a point where we are teaching teachers that respect should not be an expectation. What do you think this generation will be teaching their kids about respect? They might just remove the word from our language, simply because it has become unnecessary.

That is a good piece on "fake news". I wonder how many journalists were targeted by the BO administration and never found out. It's almost inconceivable that they chose to target only a single journalist.

BTW, part of that training I was in a few weeks ago, they brought up what would you do if you had an active shooter on a school bus. No suggestions, just the question. The consensus seemed to be that we wouldn't be able to shoot back.

Use Darwin. Let the kids with no respect and the lowest grades out of the classroom to act as human shields.

I am joking. ( but you're making a mental list )

But, yeah, on a bus is nigh impossible.

We need to get out of the "soft target" epidemic. Arm the drivers. Arm the teachers. Don't want to carry? Stop teaching and make way for someone who will. And if you're going to be a parent...BE A PARENT.

Admittedly this won't fix the respect issue immediately. But teachers who carry by definition won't be libtards...so the respect-teaching should come hand in hand with the new staffing.

But the end result has GOT to be a return to respect. That is the only way to actually fix it. Anything else is reactionary and won't fix the root cause.

+1000, what Aretha said. That shooting happened where my sweetie and her kids lived for a while... my quick scan on the news said the kid and his brother were both adopted, and both parents were deceased. Kid had shown a pattern of bad behavior, expelled from school, and had a key to the gun cabinet.

W. T. F. OVER?!?!?!?!?! How do we do the math to figure out when someone goes batshit nuts with a gun? I'm just shaking my head over it all. Listening to the radio, top hits, they played Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" while I was reading the news. Now I can't enjoy that song anymore.

Entropy doesn't just apply to physics, it applies to human behavior as well. To top it all off, we learned that a kid that works with us, in a BRAND new restaurant, died of an OD somehow... I didn't pick up if it was an accident or if he was abusing drugs. He was given a hand tie bowtie by a customer of his, asked me to show him how to tie it... I tied his first bowtie for him, UT color with the TN three star logo. Sweet kid, it just tears me to pieces. I'd hoped to make him my protégé, he had such potential as a pro server.

We've got 70ish temps, but sporadic high winds- DANG if I don't need a MC ride today. Prayers up for my boy Tim and the kids in Florida.

Or a gun store. Or any place guns weren't banned and there were likely to be other armed people about.

Kinda, once that I know of. 23 January 2011 in Detroit. 4 officers wounded, suspect killed by return fire. All officers survived.

Not technically a mass shooting, since only the assailant died.

Not sure arming teachers is the answer here. Hell, a teacher can't even take a cell phone into the classroom without worrying about it being stolen. How would you prevent a kid from stealing a gun and using it in the class. I think that would cause more problems than it would solve.

That being said, my SO is a teacher and has been for for a couple of decades. You might consider her a liberal based on some of her views, but she is a staunch believer in personal gun rights. She also feels that more guns in the classroom is not the answer. These are teachers we are talking about, not security guards or police officers. We NEED them to be teachers not armed protectors.

Over the last 10-20 years we have asked more and more of our teachers. We now ask them to be babysitters, substitute parents, and all other sorts of roles outside of the original intent of being a teacher.

I personally feel that there does need to be protection in schools, but that protection should come from a professional not an amateur with a pistol. Would you want your brain surgeon packing in case someone broke into the hospital and started shooting or would you want his entire focus to be removing a tumor?

Should a teacher be allowed to carry in school? I think that is a personal decision, but should also require extensive training on close combat skills (among others) and more importantly, safety.

I also feel the notion that our schools are filled with libtards is frankly an uneducated statement based on the very title of this thread. The idealistic makeup of every school my SO has been involved with is just as diverse as any company that I have worked at.

We argue about the root cause of school shootings, but many of you advocate for the band aid (arming Teachers) instead of sewing up the wound. A recent post nailed it and that boils down to respect for human life. That begins AND ends with the parents. The legal system has also gotten in the way by dictating how and when parents can raise their kids. I think that effort might be better served by training people how to be parents.

"Would you want your brain surgeon packing"

I only know one doctor, personally, and yes, I would. He's a much better shot than I am. Besides, I'd be all drugged up, and the perp has obviously already made it past the armed guards.
