Author Message   Angor Posted on Sunday, December 01, 2013 - 02:52 pm:        Hey, brand new XB12Ss (2006) owner, I just wanted to ask around some experienced folks and ask if the sounds coming from my engine are normal. I've heard a lot about how noisy these guys are, but I'm still nervous. The valve noise and such doesn't bother me too much, but there's a sort of knocking sound in the bottom end (to me). It might be nothing, but it might be something, and right now I'm too nervous to ride her because I don't want to make a problem worse. Go to the B.R.A.N. and see if a fellow Badwebber in your area can give your bike a listen. The engines are noisy. The good news is a clunking can often be a poorly adjusted primary chain. Next could be a loose engine sprocket nut. Both simple and inexpensive fixes. You can use a long screwdriver as a stethescope to possibly locate the noise to a specific part of the engine. If you are really worried and need to do something Right Now, cut the oil filter apart and look for debris. No debris means the problem is likely not serious. Hope this helps, Dave   Angor Posted on Tuesday, December 03, 2013 - 12:42 pm:        Thanks, I'll check around. It doesn't sound like it's off time or anything, just sort of louder than I expected. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid. I adjusted the primary, and now my low-speed riding is better but the noise is unchanged. The sound is definitely coming from the pushrod side of the engine, I think possibly the lifters (using the screwdriver stethoscope). It's regular and in time with the exhaust thump, and sort of a 'tock tock tock'. It definitely gets louder as the engine gets to temp, but it's not so loud that something is obviously wrong. I did get a magnet into the pan and came up with nothing, but haven't been able to look at the filter yet (sidewalk mechanics after dark are a pain). Thanks for the reply, hope it's nothing, I'm becoming obsessed with this noise.   Kilroy Posted on Tuesday, December 03, 2013 - 12:59 pm:        Might want to go ahead and put fresh oil in it, and the correct weight. Who knows what the previous owner was running in there. I think its 20W50 for most climates.
