I've got an older pair of Alpinestars. Bought them cause they looked good with the color scheme of the racing suit. Nothing really outstanding about them. I remember they took a hell of a long time to break in. I used to wear them around the house to loosen them up. Oh yeah, they "crash" pretty well

I purchased a pair of Prexport 360WP's this winter.
I've only had a chance to put about 300 miles on them. The are very comfortable, almost broken in out of the box.
The are a fairly low cost boot, about $160.00. Plain black with a minimum of adornments. I picked them up at www.newenough.com great folks to work with btw.

I chose them because they have a fairly low "toe" profile, meaning the toe area is not as thick as many other boots. They also don't look like you just hopped off a GP racetrack when stopping in public (restaurant etc.). One downside, they do not have as much hard armor as more expensive boots.

I'm using a pair of Sidi Sympatex. Comfortable after a day or two of wearing them, and they are waterproof. No armour to speak of in them though. If I was looking for more of a road/track boot I'd look at the Vertabrae models, lots of armour in them.

All . . . . .just picked up a Schuberth helmet from the local BMW/Guzzi dealership . . . . semms like a very nice peice of work . . . . . nice and light, and all the controls, levers, knobs, buttons and bellcranks seem to work smoothly

I gotta admit, the built-in shades make me giggle

as a data point, the parts guy at the dealership said schuberth made the Bmmr helmets . . . . .

going for a good long run this weekend (weatherman cooperating . . . . .heck, even if he doesn't), and will let you know how the helmet works/feels . . . . it has already passed the sit in the garage and make vroomvroom noises test with flying colors!

Court,
I know you have a number of Aerstich suits, have you had any problem with slider pulls breaking? Not the slider, just the pull tab.
I just replaced one last week on my right forearm, this morning the slider pull on the right leg broke off. They are all YKK zippers on mine I am assuming they havent' changed over the years.
I guess I really don't have anything to whine about considering the age of my suit.

BTW, Aerostich really stands behind their product. I purchased my suit in 1987, no problems except the sliders. I called them last week to inquire about repairing the zipper. The turn around was a bit long due to this being their busy season. However, they did send me a "slider repair kit" at no charge (I called on Tuesday, got it on Friday). It consists of 3 sliders and 6 crimp on slider stops.
It's a bit tricky to put them on but not too bad, you just need to be careful and take your time.
First you very carefully remove the two slider stops from the bottom of the zipper. This is the slow and easy part as you can easily tear the cloth zipper tape.
Once the stops are off, you VERY carefully slide the old slider off the zipper. You need to be real careful here to keep the zipper "zipped". If you don't, you will have to zip the zipper by hand , link by link.
You slide the new slider on the zipper and unzip.
When the slider is on, you crimp a slider stop on to each half of the zipper using a small pliers.

Thats it! I guess having done it once putting a new slider on the leg should be a snap.

How have all your sliders held up?

Brad:

I've had just one zipper pull break. Along, promptly, came the kit to replace the key chain I'd kinda gotten used to using. It's a good time to put the rubber covers no the zippers as well.

The RX7RR3 had to be a scam. Even with the 3 being obsoleted by the 4, I've recently bought 2 4's (Kocinski and Sport Yellow)and 3 C notes is just flat unreasonable.

And yes. . . I got, well ALMOST got, scammed on E-Bay once. I found a little known codicil in a state statute and put the fear of God in 4 folks. Case QUICKLY closed. And, Court provided with yet another HILARIOUS story.

After you have employed your helmet to protect that head.....well, remember to use it!

On the Subject of Zipper pull tabs. It has been my habit to cut off the metal tab and replace it with a loop of knotted cord. Easier to grab and won't stick to bare fingers in the real cold. Good cord can be found in most camping/outdoor shops in a wide variety of colors.

I've got about 15 hours in my new Shuberth Concept helmet (Flipfront-type) . .. . . longest stretch was about 6 hours spread out over 10 during a day-long ride . . . . . .

Fits great (my hat siz is 7 1/4, and I seem to have a Shoei head . . .. the Shuberth is a Large), not lifting at low triple-digit speeds.

The strap adjustment is great (push-button release), but initial adjustment is a bit fiddly.

The Clear visor seems darned near optically perfect, with little or no distortion that I can sense, and holds in any of the 6 positions well at speed.

The ventilation seems very effective so far, thought it isn't August yet . . . .I can clear the visor really quickly by either raising up one notch, or pulling it forward into what the factory calls the "city position." This moves the entire visor forward about a 1/16", leaving a gap around the entire periphery of it. It'll stay there at least to 80, although it's kinda noisey at that speed.

The only beefs I have are:

no one seems to make helmets for people afflicted with what by buddy calls "Oppie Head." My ears tend to stick out a bit (a bit?), and get a bit sore after a couple-four hours at a strech. Minor complaint, to be sure.

The space around the ears is JUST to small to install my speakers (snagged from teh rider warehouse . . .. work great up to about 70, not enough to overcome wind balst above that). I may try to enlarge that area this weekend, and, of course, this is in no way a negative comment on the helmet itself, but just a data point.

The manual for the helmet is translated from German, which results in some charming phrases . . . . also, the manuals suggests that you store your helmet in the provided bag. Of course, no such bag is supplied in the states (likely a cost-cutting measure, as I believe the bags are supplied in the UK . . . . .)

BTW . . the parts guy sez Shuberth is the manufacturer of the BWM helmets that Bimmer no longer imports . . . . . .seems like a quality piece of gear.

All in all, I'm happy with the helmet . . . to quote another friend, "it's not a bad thing to purchase your saftey gear from Chermany!"

Watch it Court there are a number of us lurking here with ears that stick out a "bit"

Anyone here have any experience with Simpson helmets? I've had my heart set on a predator for a while now but I have never found a place to try one on and with the multitude of sizes I was wondering how close to hat size they are.
Peace

Aikigecko .... I have worn a number of Simpson helmets in open-wheel formula race cars on road circuits. I found them comfortable and less susceptible to lift. Also very good at minimizing fogging.
I visited their website just now and didn't see the Predator model listed under motorcycle helmets. Is this an old model? The Outlaw looks to be the current high-tech motorcycle model.
Be sure to check the Snell date - they should be Snell M-2000 now. And it should be said, don't buy a car helmet for motorcycle use. These carry an SA- designation on the Snell sticker.

Aikigecko, I picked up a Simpson Bandit this winter and have about 400 miles of use with it.

It's a real tight fit as I put it on, so big ears might have to be tucked in with care. But feels comfortable when in place. Less wind noise than the cheap helmet I was using before. I got mine through The Helmet Shop. They have measuring instructions to get the right fit. Mine was right on the money. M-95 rating.

With the dark visor, I get "Stormtrooper" coments all the time.

All . . . .. with my purchasing my first full face helmet (for street use . . .. old bell stars for racing years ago don't count), and runnin in the rain on the first day out with it, I stopped by the NAPA store for some RAIN-X, to help the moisture sheet off the visor . . .. .

for those of you not familiar with the product, it's great on car/truck windshields, but the package specifically says NOT to apply it to plastic . . ..

so, my question is, what can I put on the outside of the visor to help the rain sheet off . . . . . although I tried, I couldn't always keep my speed above 80 in the rain

thanks

My father always suggested Armor-All on the shield, to aid in the removal of bug corpses. Don't know what it would do in the rain though.

Bomber,
I have used Rain-X for years on my Shoei's with no problems. I don't get much more than a year out of a face shield anyway due to scratched etc. If it takes longer to mess them up using RainX, I'd never know.

Go for it, the damage is already done if there IS any. Enjoy, the stuff works.

Thanks for the Simpson info, I meant the Bandit (Brain Fart). I like the Black Bandit with a black visor shield, good Darth Vader look to it.

As for visor coatings, I've used Rain X but I prefer Plexus; it just works better. On the inside I am now using the same anti fog stuff I use on my diving mask. No clue as to the name, it's blue though and works well.

I'll second the vote for Plexus. I bought my first can a few weeks ago. I can't believe I've been riding for 30+ years without this wonder spray. Makes shining up the new AGV a piece of cake. Keeps the bugs from sticking on the face shield too.

Dart,
I have a pair if Prexport 360WP's. I picked them up over the winter, I now ave around 600 miles or so with them. I like them. They were realitivly cheap ($160.00) and seem to be well constructed.

The WP stands for water proof. After last Sunday I stand as witness that they work! Everything else I had on was soaking wet, not my feet though.
They seem to be well built for the price. They are plain black with no contrasting graphics. Quite stealth.

Regarding size, if I remember correctly, they run a bit small. They are sold in metric sizes.
I ordered mine from http://www.newenough.com (great folks by the way) I told the lady what size athletic shoe I wear, she was spot on with the size. They fit perfect. I think they have a couple of different models available, check them out.

See my post at the top for a bit more detail.
