I have a '08 xb12xt.

I have installed a drummer exhaust (original), a buell racing ecm (w/ drummer map), and the american sportbike open airbox kit.

I commute and ride in the seattle area and noticed in heavy rain the bike would begin to bog and on occasion stall at low RPM's.

I let the bike sit for a while and it will start back up.

I decided the bogging issue was connected with the open airbox and water making its way to the filter & intake.

So I removed the open airbox plate and reinstalled the stock airbox cover retaining the re-breather bypass and K&N filter.

I have since had no issues with the bike in the rain.

However, the Buell Racing ECM was tuned specifically for an xb12 with the drummer exhaust and an "open airbox type" setup.

My questions:

~ Is it neccessary to open up the airbox to run optimally with the ECM map?

~ If so... how could I cut the stock airbox to increase the air intake and not sacrifice ridability in heavy rain?

Thanks for the help

Are you running the stock paper filter or K&N?

I run a similar setup on mine, even with the open airbox I can still ride in nasty thunderstorms.

It may be worth checking your sparkplug wires for damage, they tend to rub against the motor and short out when wet.

Terrys1980,

I am running the K&N filter.

I noticed your in the Oil and Gas industry.

I roughnecked in Searcy, Arkansas with a bunch of guys from Jena, Louisiana for Nomac drilling co.

I also roughnecked in Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming.

Small world man.

Froggy,

I will check out the sparkplug wires.

I have been having electrical issues with bike.

Recently I would put the key in the ignition, turn it to run, press the start button... the starter would make one click... then all the lights on the dash would turn off EXCEPT the high beam indicator.

I would then turn the key in the ignition to off... then all the lights on the dash would light up.

What was going on was beyond me so I gave it to a local harley shop to diagnose.

The problem would not duplicate once it was there.

I came to pick it up and the problem happened again as we attempted to start it in the shop.

They kept it again... noticed corrosion on the ground for the negative battery cable... cleaned and tightened that and all was copacetic.

No issues since.

However, this bike was a California bike and sat for a while... '08 with 2300 miles on it when I bought it september '11

Its got 3300 mile on it now.

What would you recommend for cleaning and further preventing corrosion on sensitive components on this bike (electrical connections, grounds, etc.) and what specific components would you clean?

I know this bike will be outstanding once I can get the bugs worked out.

Thanks for your help

I'm with Froggy on this one. I haven't ridden my bike in real heavy rain but I have started it right after the bike got drenched and rode it without any issues. I did my own open airbox mod.

I work on/with remotely operated vehicles (underwater robots) so most of my work is in the Gulf of Mexico.

I have quite a few friends that work around the states doing inland drilling. They work mostly in Pennsylvania, West Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana.
