I want to change my fuel filter and need to purge the pressure prior to removing the lines. I have seen the procedure on unplugging the fuel pump, running the bike till it quits, then hit the start button for an additional 3 seconds. My problem is the bike will not start with the fuel pump unplugged. Do i just have to wait a few hours for the pressure to bleed off, or is there another way to relieve the fuel pressure???

The bike doesn't have to start, just cranking a few times will cause it to inject fuel into the cylinders and release the pressure in the injectors.

Tried the start button for a few seconds, but the lines still feel like they are still under a lot of pressure.

I've had my fuel filter off several times on my 99S3 - just take loose the hose clamps and change it out, its not a big deal.
You'll lose some gas, so have a rag handy.
Its super easy
