Hi, Im planning a trip to Spain next year with one of my mates. Currently all i have is leather gear which i think is going to be too hot to wear over there. Anybody have any recommendations for stuff to wear that still keeps you cool and your skin together if you fall off? Im from the UK and think its hot when we get 20'c weather here dont want to think about the 45'c weather over there in leathers  Thanks | ||

You'll find that most hot weather gear is mesh. I wear a mesh jacket w/ armour, and mesh overpants, also armoured. If I could afford it, I would probably buy Motoport kevlar mesh gear, since a lot of the mesh you normally see is not very durable - even some reports of mesh and other non-Cordura material melting into the skin under the heat of abrasion. I ride where there is high heat and high humidity, which may not be the case in Spain (you would get higher heat but lower humidity, in south/central spain, right?) Bottom line - best to stay covered for crash protection but also for sun and dehydration protection. Mesh works well, then there's perforated leather gear (never tried it), or lots of vents in standard Cordura textile gear. Try browsing online to get an idea of what's available and the price range. Perforated leather always offers more protection, but I have a Shift Air Avenger jacket for when it gets real hot. I've ridden about 800 miles with it and I've been really impressed with its comfort and craftsmanship. It looks like it offers good protection, especially with the Daniese G2 back protector that I added. My only gripe is that the jacket rides a little short on my midsection, so hopefully it will keep my stomach covered in the event of a get off. | ||

This is the problem with a lot of our opinions on gear: we hope it works when an accident happens, but we have very little feedback from riders who have to "use" their gear. If everyone who ever put a piece of gear to a test (ouch) were to post a review of the gear's performance, we would have a better database to help us all choose the best gear. and no matter what gear you get, there might be right leg heat issues from the bike... If you can, get bottoms and tops that zip (at least the 8" rear zipper) to help w/ Semper's issue. (Message edited by fahren on September 13, 2009) | ||

I've crash tested the Buell mesh jacket and Cortech hrx series 2 pants. 40 mph or so lowside, walked away without a scratch. I've posted pics in other threads, can do so here if interested. | ||

I've got a hybrid set of leathers. they have removable elbow knee pads. they have leather on all of the impact parts if u fell off. elbows, knees, shoulders, back, bum, outside thighs. and the rest is cordura or something. can't really remember. but give the feeling of security and also keeping the gear light weight and allow air flow. purchased of ebay some time ago and haven't ever seen any in the shops. comfortable and flexible and feel protected. | ||

Crash tested the Buell Adventure pants. Lots of bruises but I walked away (with help). Buell Turbulent jacket would be my first choice. | ||

I have a Vanson Supermoto jacket that is mostly mesh with leather in high risk areas. Slid about 75 feet at 50MPH with light damage to jacket. Mostly scuffing of outside layer, I still wear it. In hot weather I wear a base layer of wicking material, but remember to drink plenty of liquids as you don't realize how much you lose. A lot of track day guys use Underarmour shirts and similar pants. |
