Have serious problem. Washed the bike today and started it up afterward and everything was cool, let it run for a few minutes to shake all the water off. Turned it off and came inside for a few minutes then went back out to ride, started it and the fuel pump was whining, and didn't stop after I started it, engine light came on, and the fuel pump kept whining really loud. Shut it off and tried to re-start. Hit the started and heard a pop and every thing is dead.
Checked all the fuses and they are all good. When I turn the key the gauges don't come on. Headlight and taillight work. The brights indicator is the only indicator light that comes on. |

I found that the ground wire to the fuel pump was burnt and broken. I'm not sure that this is my problem but need to be fixed. HD wants 70 bucks for the wiring harness that connects to the fuel pump.
I don't even see why you would need a ground wire running in there as it's bolted to the frame. |

Your an ET repairing the ground is well within your specialty, BUT take a look for a post, not sure if it's in knowledge vault or XB section that shows wire chaffing in the tank on the pump assembly. Worth checking with the problem you have.

Then the ground between the (tail- ?) frame and the engine is broken. That wire from the fuel pump is the last remaining ground then. Burning the fuel pump's ground wire usually happens when trying to start the engine.

ID073897 thanks. I just recently completed the tail swap and put a firebolt tail on my Lightning. I was using the seat bolts as the grounds and apparently that was good enough. I drilled and tapped directly into the sub-frame and the bike turns on now. Only problem is my fuel pump is out of the bike. I had to order a new wiring harness for the fuel pump from buell because the wire broke at the gromet, so the wire is unrepairable. |

Well it's not running right. I attempted to repair the wire in the meantime until I get the new harness by grounding on the outside of the fuel pump instead of the inside. It sits there and will fire up and run and revs fine. I got on it to take for a test drive and got out on the street and got up to about 3000 RPM then it bogs out and won't rev any higher. Rode down the street and turned around to come back and every time I pull the clutch it wants to die, have to rev it to keep it running. On the way back up the street it didn't want to go at all. I putted back down the street having to rev it with the clutch pulled and then let it out to go, and pull it back in before it died revving it again.
Could the ground be causing this? I was under the impression that in an electrical fuel pump the pump either works or it doesn't, they are not dependent on the RPM or load of the engine and put out a constant pressure.
Why is the bike running while in neutral th when a load is applied it doesn't want to run right? |

Got my new wiring harness in today and just installed on bike. Took her out for a spin and runs like a champ. I'm glad that's over.
So, for the record the fuel pump must have a internal ground to work properly. External grounds won't work.
