The bike also has died on me once just joy riding. I tapped the coil with a hammer and it started back up.. any ideas can you have a crack or something in the coils?? |

A hammer? What are you doing riding a Buell with a Triumph tool kit? Hitting the coil with a hammer is not recomended diagnostic procedure. Most likely you have a troublesome safety switch or loose ground somewhere. If you'd let us in on what model bike you are talking about, it might help us better advise you. |

Per his profile:

I think we need a pic of the bikes. If whacking it with a hammer helps then I'm leaning towards a wire or grounding issue or some sort of corrosion that the hammer whack dislodges. |

sorry first time poster.. its a 2002 x1 very well could be a lose wire but i'm leaning back to the coil as the problem but i dont know if you can have a crack in the coil that will only disrupt every now and then. when i got the bike you could tell it had fallen over because a crack in the hand grip and the coil could have taken a beating from this. i have checked the clutch safety switch and bypassed it all together because of a loose wire.

Coils are pretty cheap and I'm lazy. |

Looks like you probably have fun with those two extremes of the spectrum. Follow the wires, run it at night and look for arcing from the coil housing, or remove the coil and look for burnt/bare paint. Could be an overheating problem with the coil as well (if it's anything like some old cars I've had). |
