Ok... 5400 miles on my OEM Pirelli's. The rear squared off rather quickly on the way home from a long ride yesterday. So, I'll need to replace it "of course" but is there any "down side" with going with a wider tire?

This is my first time having change anything and I don't want to miss an opportunity or make a mistake.

Thanks!

Wider tires will make the bike turn heavier (and arguably slower).

I'm thinking of going the other direction. CeeJay was running a 170 on his 9r at Mid Ohio, and putting a lap on me per 20 minute session. He was too chicken to follow me when I caught air on the pit exit curbing, but other then that was out-riding me all day long (I had 180 syncs on). We both had XB9's.

So even a 170 is more then enough for even track days up through novice, at least on a 9.

180's are easier to find though. But an MeZ6 or a Scorpion Sync in a 170 would be a nice setup to try as well.

thanks for the compliments Reep!
I used to think running the wider tires was better, that was until I went from a diablo 180 to that metz 170 purely because I had them sitting around. The only problem I can find with the 170 rear is that they aren't as "tall" thus lowering your cornering clearance and decreasing the amount of tire you have to lean over on. On the street I rarely get that far over on a curve-just aren't that many really tight 40 MPH turns around me thus the only differenc is looks, which for some is number one in terms of importance. I'll be getting another 170 rear but I will probably look for a better aspect ratio.
