I found a little time to hack away at an intake I picked up on eBay. It's Sportster intake just be clear. I'm surprised more isn't said and done about this part of the intake tract. People spend gobs of money getting their heads ported and I never hear of what they did or didn't do to their intake. The one I'm working on was really quite lumpy. Well, after an hour with some files, another half hour with a grinder and another 3/4 hour with some sanding roll, it's really quite respectable. Oh, forgot, another 1/4 hour with a felt bob and coarse lapping compound on the grinder. Now that the lumps have been dealt with, I'm not quite sure were to go with the surface finish. A quick tour through the archives and everyone pretty much agrees that you don't want it too smooth,,,,,or too rough. So, how smooth is too smooth? How rough is too rough? Exactly what is the procedure to get that perfect finish? Polish it out then throw it in the bead blaster? Walnut shells maybe? Regards, Walt | ||

Without having any expertise to back me up, I would clean it up and maybe do the beadblasting thing. You don't want it TOO smooth. A slightly rough surface aids in atomization (as you probably already know). I would avoid a mirror-polish; anything less would probably be fine. | ||
