Old new guy here,

Have recently purchased a 98 S1 (Molten Orange) which I would like to find more detail on. I believe this was a limited edition model but don't know how limited and I am curious about the Buell history of it. Other related item is a starting issue which I am sure I have narrowed down to a worn solenoid switch. Here, in Australia, I phoned our local HD Buell dealership and was quoted $90 for a 98 sportster solenoid kit. When I asked for the same kit for a 98 Buell the price was a $190 then I asked if it was possible to cross reference the part numbers and was told HD and Buell part numbers are completely different. So, how similar are certain sportster parts to Buell parts??? Any ideas on the solenoid???

Thanks
Warren

Tell us about your starting problem -- it may not be a solenoid as these seem pretty bulletproof. Usually bad batteries, bad grounds, ignition switches are the gremlins.

Hello mate

Random clicking from starter motor or solenoid. Doesn't matter if the bike is hot or cold, has been run or left for a week, when she wants to start, she will start strongly. The battery is a quality brand. Manufacturer date however, is June 2004. Everytime I test with a volt metre, I get 12 - 12.5 as a reading. Even after continuously trying to start and running the battery down, it only ever takes about 1 hour to fully recharge using a 3.5 Amp charger. Have tested ignition relay and starter relay and both are good. Have cleaned with sand paper all known grounding points and still have random starting issue. She hasn't left me stranded yet but she will if I keep pushing it. New battery or out with the starter and test???

Thanks
Warren

Firemanjim, thanks for your input and sorry I haven't got back to you for awhile. Left the bike standing for 2 weeks, went to start, and same old clicking. Stopped myself from charging the battery and concentrated on cleaning the relay terminals. On close inspection, found the starter relay terminals could have been a tighter fit. Have crimped the terminals on the female socket, so they have become tighter on the relay itself and it started first time. Did not screw the relay back to the frame, have wedged it between the crank case breather and one of the oil tank lines. So, hopefully will reduce the vibration and it will make it a lot easier to get at without any tools. Will update in a couple of weeks.

Hope this works for you as well Joe.

Thanks
Warren
