i just put the top end and cams (n8's) in my sportster and it runs great but somethings banging around in there. its not rocker clearance, i checked.
it had a t-storm top end and SE 536 in it but i wanted them for the s2...
i put a stethescope on and its coming from around the rocker/head area...
primary chain seems ok.
i have a rattling and knocking in a consistant way. goes faster if i rev. i thought at first it was just no oil up there after rebuild but it didnt quit.

im thinking maybe a bad lifter?
would a bad lifter make alot of noise in there?
how do you inspect the lifter (what should i look for to be bad?)
any help is appreciated!

Jason,
Is this in your '94 XL? Did it go away? I helped a buddy put N8's in his '95 1200 when it was new, I also put an EV3 in a new '95FX, and both motors had top end ticking afterwards. No big clacking, tho. I think it's normal for these motors to make the noise... we even used adjustable pushrods....

I just put Lightning cams in my M2... at first a lifter wouldn't come back up... bike was down for 10 days, waiting on parts and the lifters bled down... after 3-4 warmups the lifters came up. After a couple interstate trips most of the ticking went away. Still havea little more noise than stock, but I think it's normal. If I pull the timing cover I can hear a bit more cam noise too, I think the end play is set looser on the bolt-ins just to be safe.
