So uh... with that 1145R coming out, and the Buell Inside Pass events stating "Free On-Track Test Rides of the Latest Buell Motorcycles", I'm thinking I'm heading to VIR in September!

Wife is pregnant and due Sept 12, but her mom will be in town and she typically is a week or so early. She has stated emphatically that I can go to this event, without any guilt.

So, I'm in, but was wondering if anyone is trailering up to the event. I don't have a small bike trailer (only REALLY big enclosed trailer) and the only vehicle I have that can tow is my wife's Durango, and she'll be needing that for toting the family around. I can pitch in for gas, or if I get a decent vehicle and trailer between now and then, take a couple others with me.

Anyway, thought I'd start a thread on this because I hadn't seen one yet. Hope to hear from some of you that are going!

Ooops.. 1125R? Eh... something like that. Whatever it is, it promises to be fast.

BTW, I assume that standard track prep needs to be done on our bikes? Tape lights, safety wire, etc? If anyone has experience with this, I'd greatly appreciate a checklist of things to prepare for track days.

Thanks!

If that is true and we can test ride one of the 1125R, I will have to go too. I am coming from another direction so I can not help with the trailer. If I am not going on the track, I will probably ride up.

BTW, I'm in the Charlotte area, Mooresville to be exact. I'll be on the lookout for a nice little trailer to buy/borrow that will sufficiently hold a couple bikes.

There's a thread already open on this one in the MD, VA, DE, WV Stormfront..

As far as I can tell, they didn't say anything about test rides except that there would be '07 models to test ride.. however, I'm sure if the new 'R' is there.. they better have a bunch of 'em, cause we'll tear the tires off 'em.. and the line to ride one will be.. well.. Long.. hehehehehehe..

Matt, I don't believe that you will have to safety wire.

Partial list:

Tires at 80% new or better.
Bike maintained with no apparent fluid leaks.
Good brakes.
No antifreeze in water if applicable.
Tools.
work stands.
canopy
chairs
Cooler and Ice.
Water/drinks.
Food.
earplugs.
Appropriate gear (hardshell back protector may be required).
5-10 gallons of fuel.
Friend.
Remove mirrors.
Tape over glass (I use one layer of blue painters tape and cover it with duck tape. This covers very well and comes off easily).
First aid kit.
Riders more serious than I bring tire warmers, lap timers, rain tires, and the like.

Hope this helps some. The Buell website for inside pass has much more info.

Mike - I have heard of safety wire but have never seen it. What does this mean?

For the circle track cars I've worked on, we have to safety wire any drain plug type bolts. At some tracks we had to safety wire darn near everything... which really sucked.

Read through the .pdf they send you when you sign up for the InsidePass event, and it didn't mention anything about safety wiring, just taping up glass and lights.

Excellent list Rubberdown! I'll create a checklist out of it. Do you think I should buy some race gas for the event, or is pump gas fine? And if race gas, what octane?

If you're riding a street bike.. Use pump gas. Race gas won't really help you if your engine isn't set up for it.

And if you really want to try some. They sell it at the pumps at VIR North paddock - The pumps take Credit/Debit cards.

I'm in!

This will be my 3rd event, so while I'm still new to this I am at least getting a little better about learning what to bring. Mike's (Rubberdown) list above is pretty complete. The main thing is that you have all the appropriate riding gear and that your bike is well maintained.

Matt-I have a small trailer you can use if you want. Rubberdown, myself and Pete(non-badwebber) will be going. Don't know if Rachel is coming or not, if not we we may have space on one of the trailers. You can come up 24/27 and pass within minutes of my house. Pete and I are planning on leaving out the morning the day before in order take time getting there. So give that some thought, you're more than welcome to come the day/evening before we leave and spend the night that way we can get an early start.

So when is everyone else going to leave???? And which class are you signed up for. I signed up for beginner, when Pete signed up they only had intermediate/advance left. So he signed up for Intermediate and he and I are going to trade slots. He bought a SuperHawk bythe way!!! Man that thing has power. I rode it, hit the throttle and I thought the rear end just squatted a little, until I let off the gas!!!!

Hey Jim,
Thanks for the offer! Let me know how the space looks on your trailers when we get closer to event time.

I'm registered for Intermediate, pretty much for the same reason that your buddy Pete is; no Beginner slots left. I'm sure it'll be a humbling experience.

I really don't want to take the auto-trailer, unless I have like 8 bikes to take. Moving to a new property in the next week, and the previous owner left a little utility trailer, so considering adapting it to a small bike transporter.

I probably won't head up until the night before. Can't get too much time off work. And I'll have to head home the night of.

Which day in September? Since I'm only a hour away, I'd at least like to check out the action and see you guys again. VIR is one beautiful facility.

U4 - Are you guys going on the track, riding up, or riding up and going on the track?

We didn't nail down a plan yet, but we'll probably leave pretty early. I'll probably load my bike into my brother-in-law's trailer ahead of time and either crash at his place the night before or drive up in separately in my car. If we leave from his place in Wake Forest we'll probably be rolling around 6am, if I leave from Fuquay I'll probably be rolling around 5am.

As for classes, I've done two events with Nesba in the beginner class, but my brother-in-law convinced me to sign up for intermediate for this event. He says I'll be fine in intermediate, but I'm sure I'll be a back marker for at least the morning sessions. From what I have heard, the bigger key with running in faster groups is not so much the speed or the lap times, but consistency. If you're consistent and predictable it's easier for the faster riders to get around you with clean passes, and that makes it less stressful for everyone. If you change your line or your speed unexpectedly when a faster rider is approaching you could end up with a Robers/Melandri type incident.

Twig-the 12th of September!

We will be trailering up AND going on the track. A day at the track is not something you want to have to ride back home after, on the bike!!!
