After swapping back to the stock ECM from the race ECM, I apparently failed to push the ECM cable bundle down under the battery negative terminal.

This apparently caused it to get pinched between the seat and the sharp edge of the negative terminal, which eventually cut through to ground out one of the wires.

It caused my check engine light to blink (12 blinks, pause, 12 blinks) and periodic headlight dimming (riding at dusk). Obviously, with all the wires in there, symptoms will vary depending on which wire gets grounded. No other runnability issues (remarkably), the bike continued to run as good as ever.

Remarkably, I found it with just about 5 minutes of looking (start your diagnosis with the last thing you screwed with).

I slapped on some plastic split loom armor around both those cables, and made sure they went under the negative terminal, and buttoned it back up. Everything seems happy again.

So anyway, watch where you route those two wire bundles if you go messing with the ECM.

Bill,

12 flashes means there is no error code.

I asume you are familiar with the procedure of checking error codes (it's in the service manual ; ) ), it starts with 6 blinks, code, 2 secs pause, 2nd code, 6 blinks. If there are no codes, it skips the 2 secs pause.

You wouldn't happen to know if the wire that got ground out is in fact a wire of the data link connector? Nevermind if you don't. I'm just thinking out loud.

But more importantly, how much did you notice in terms of performace swapping the stock ecm with the race ecm?

Hey man, I come from the tubers. I don't bother going to the service manual until I see what left a smoking crater ; )

Seriously, I knew the last thing I putzed with, so as soon as I pulled in the garage, I popped the seat off and looked at it. Immediately saw the cable bundle pressed over that negative terminal with the sharp edges. Pulled up the wire, saw the tiny exposure, moved the wire, and fired the bike back up. 5 minutes max, and most of that was pulling the cargo net off to remove the seat.

I can't answer the ECM question yet. My dealer accidentally put in a 03 9 ecm, which is a different part then the 05 sx ecm. It was an honest mistake, when you look at the 04 performance parts manual from Buell (or even look at the 03 race ECM box), it says "for all 03 and later XB9's.

So they ordered a 9sx part, and will put that in for free and reset the TPS while I wait. They are being good about it.

The 03 race ECM had better top end, but a pretty big hole around 3000 RPM. The 9sx stock ECM is much better across the board. It seems to give up just a tiny bit up top, but does FAR better down on the bottom.

My plan is to do a dyno run with the stock ECM, get the tps calibrated and take a short ride with the correct 9sx race ECM, and get an immediate dyno run with that. Both runs will have air fuel plots as well. It will probably happen next week.

The configuration will be an 05 9sx with stock exhaust, cut down snorkel, cut open (12) inner airbox, race air filter. Two runs, one with stock ECM, one with race ECM. Should be a helpful plot, my $70 contribution to the community.

Or even the stock 9sx ecm Glitch. It looks to be a very good map. Had I actually been able to ride my 9sx before buying, I would not have asked for the race ECM. I assumed the thing would ride just like all the other 9's I had ridden rode. Its much better (AFAIK).

Hopefully I will have dynos by next week and we will know for sure...

I'd like to see a comparison of an old 9 race ecm and a new 05 race ecm. See if any improvements or changes were made. Like maybe and hopefully more fuel in the upper rpms.
