Hey guys. 03 xb9s.

Backstory, aftermarket battery, positive pole was making connection with the ecm mount bolt. Super-heated the bolt and melted part of my ecm. Replaced with OEM battery, tested ecm. ECM still functioning as supposed to. Bike was fine at that point.

Fast forward 2 days. Riding bike, bike began cutting out at speed. Just a little bit at first. No CEL yet. More and stronger cutting. Eventually bike would hardly stay running. No cel. I was able to limp it into a parking lot. Eventually it wouldn't start and threw a CEL.

Popped ignition fuse. Replaced and started. Now running on 1 cylinder, would not stay running. Replaced ECM and started again. Same thing again.

Checked CEL code, 24: Short to power or ground for coil 2 (rear).

Tested injectors and spark for rear cylinder, both test positive function.

Replaced with new battery pulled airbox to check wiring and harness. Everything seemed well. Buttoned it back up. Closely examined ecm plug wires. Two had been in contact with high heat and hat the covering melted back. (TPS & O2 wires. Tested for positive functionality.) Re-covered exposed wire, cleared faults, disconnected battery and re-surfaced contact patches.

Fired it up again, Runs awkwardly for a moment and will not idle on it's own. Hard to tell if only running on 1 cylinder or not. Quickly changes and is definitely only running in the front cylinder. CEL 24 again.

And that is where it sits now. Not sure where to go from here honestly. I am comfortable working with metal but electricity is something I have always found infinitely aggravating and elusive. Does anybody have any ideas for where I should direct my attention?

Also, not sure if related or not. Almost everytime I start the bike, unless I had just ran it; and sometimes even then. The starter will pause for a second and all electric power drops out. But then the starter surges back and it starts right up. It is not battery dependent. It will do the same thing with a different good and fully charged battery.

Sounds like a bad ground and possibky a bad coil. Check the ground strap under the airbox and the grounds in the tail section. Add spur washers to the ground spots in the tail if they are not already present, and make sure there is no paint under the tie rod under the airbox where it bolts to the frame. Use ECM Spy to listen to the clicks of the coil front and rear. One half can go out, had this happen to me before.
