Ok,

Bike is just getting to 5K miles. At 2K they put a new ECM in it because it just didn't run right. It was loosing power, backfires, cutting out. Seem to clear it up somewhat but still not quite right. Now starting to do the same thing. Bike starts ok, runs well, but at about 3500 rpm starts to cough and backfire. If I keep it at below that seems to be ok.
I have about a month left on the warranty. Any thoughts on possible causes or should I leave it to chance at the dealership?

TIA

Or check and remake grounds and battery connections

Sorry Doz, keeping this one! Will check the grounds tomorrow. I redid them on the Uly but haven't messed with this one. Seems weird that it would always happen around 3500 rpm.

Ok seems to have done the trick. I only found two ground points, one on either side of the battery on the frame. Took them apart and cleaned all connections and then did about a 45 minute ride. No issues. Thanks for the pointers!

Maybe it was due to the frequency of the vibration?

Mine is choppy in that range when cold but gets better as the bike warms up. TPS reset seemed to help it a bit as well, but that was after I brought it from Vegas in the back of the truck.

I'll check my grounds when I put mine back together and meybe it will help.

I am experiencing the same issues on my bike. I have cleaned the grounds, moved some questionable splices out of harms way and tugged and pulled every wire and connector I could find, but the problem hasn't been solved. I though the ECM was the culprit because I could replicate the symptoms by messing with it (though only when the bike was hot). However, another badwebber kind enough to do some testing for me hasn't found anything wrong with the ECM yet, so I am stuck at this point.

I hope your issue was indeed nothing more than the grounds. If not, let me know and I'll keep you posted with what I find (assuming I find anything).

Thanks. Am going to replace plugs as well this weekend during the 5k oil change. Rode her in to work today and seemed to run ok. Will check the TPS as well. It could be something in the wiring harness going to the ECM if it starts acting up again. I hate intermittent problems.

I've had a couple issues over the years and am always amazed how just remaking the grounds helps. Doesn't hurt to check most other fasteners/nuts/bolts while your at it. Heck, spend a couple hours with a radio, a six pack and the shop manuel and really go over your bike.
