i usually fill up to the top of the bottom section of the tank with the bike on the kickstand. you know, the lip that sits about two inches into the tank. not the most exact, but even still, a small fluctuation of fuel wouldn't change the mileage more than a quarter of a mile per gallon. when i'm by myself, i tuck in tight to the bike on the freeway.when i do, i can feel the bike speed up so i have to let off the gas a little to remain at a constant speed. with my wife on the back, going 75-85 on the freeway we normally get about 50-52. like i said, not too easy on the throttle. i normally use 91 octane, but i've never had any issues with 87 in a pinch. |

Ok, Hate to post to this again, but my bike is still defying what most of you guys say should happen.
I rode from Dubuque, IA to NE Wisconsin on friday.
I filled up with 91 octane in Dubuque, mostly highway, 75-80 MPH with about 20 minutes of 55MPH... 49.3 MPG.
I filled up with 93 octane in Waukesha, WI. Mostly highway, 75-80 MPH with about 30 minutes of 55 and 20 minutes of stop and go. 51.6 MPG. Not conclusive, but not following the accepted BadWeB norm.
I am going to try 87 octane of the ride back... |

Fuel light comes on at 3.3 gallons on the 3.8 gallon frame correct?
Not sure about the 12 or other peoples bikes, but my 9R, the light consistently comes on at 2.7 gallons (filled to the inner lip). |

Mac so what you are saying is as soon as the light comes on you go fill up and you put 1.1 gallons to top it off? |

....the ol' lunchbox gave me a good chuckle! I still haven't reached 200 miles on a tank, but i did manage 192.3 and the bike is holding steady at 44.6mpg average.
Last night I did 32.7 miles on reserve. not bad huh? i made it to a gas station too. |

well fella's it finally happened! For the first time in 35.6k miles, I managed to hit 50.6 mpg or 208.6 miles on the tank! Surprisingly enough, that was riding back from the WV buell rally last Sunday with side bags and my wife on the back AND I wasn't riding conservatively either! Using 87 octane of course.

No rush on it, it is going back on the dusty shelf. I'll probably end up putting the SS tail section back on over the winter. |
