I recently changed my belt on my XB9R and upgraded to a stronger belt. The belt seems like that there are strings coming out of it. I looked up the service manual and it says this is ok but monitor run. Did this happen to anybody else here, and if it did, does the belt had to be replaced eventually? To replace the belt at the Harley dealership was very expensive (I live in an apartment and don't have the tools nor the space to do this on my own), and if this is preventable it would be nice to know about it now. I also bought some carbon fiber guards to fit the wider belt, and the lower belt cover seems fairly close to the belt, but I don't think it is rubbing, otherwise the belt would look like that all around, and it only looks like that in one area.

No need to worry.

When you go to the newer belt, you have to replace every guard and cover, the pulley and, sometimes, the brake cylinder.

Pretty sure you leave off the inner stone guard.

Details are on americansportbike.com

Sure looks like somebody screwed up.

He replaced all of the guards. What makes you say someone screwed up?

My 2007 Uly had 900 miles on it and showed signs of fraying along the outside edge. Bike was virtually new, had never been down and no indication of bent swingarm bolt. I removed the belt, used Scotchbrite pad to polish the drive pulley inner flange surface contacting the belt, then (and here's the controversial part)- carefully applied a TRACE of Dow Corning silicone grease along the belt frayed edge.

That was 1100 miles ago and no problems since with fraying. I do occasionally reapply once every 500-600 miles if the belt shows signs of rubbing.

I have an '08 and the belt has had a little fray similar to that since the first service. Now up to 25,000 mi. and still no issues. As long as it doesn't get any worse, I wouldn't worry about it.

If OEM came frayed, then I suppose this would be just fine.

If every other conversion came out frayed, then I suppose this would be just ducky.

Given those two situations are not true, then forgive me for saying somebody screwed up.

The fact that the manual says this is an okay to run, continue to monitor situation, doesn't take away from the statement that it's not supposed to look like that.

Ok, but they often do come that way! The cords don't all run the length of the belt, so sometimes they appear frayed on the edges when they are cut.

Looks normal. I wouldn't worry about it.
