Would anybody happen to know what size and thread the oil dipstick is on a 2008 XB12? Mine apparently vibrated out and is now gone. I have a 750 mile trip planned for this weekend so I kinda need one. If anybody knows or can find out or can check their own PLEASE let me know! I have a lathe and can make a temporary plug for this weekend. Thank you! |

This will be way crude but... You could get a rubber stopper and push it in the hole, then insert a screw in the center of the stopper to wedge it more tightly into the hole. You could also thread a washer/plate, put a screw through the stopper and spin the plate on the end, insert in hole and draw the plate up to expand the end of the stopper so that it can not come out. I can measure the plug when I get home, but I know I don't have a thread gauge so I'll have to just give you the measurements for the outside of the threads and the space between each. If I was to guess, I would say probably standard 1/4 inch pipe thread. (that would be 1/4 ID pipe) If it is a standard pipe thread, then you might be able to pick one up anywhere plumbing is sold. |

I was thinking of the wrong part, closer to 1/2 pipe thread. Major diameter is about .825 and pitch is a little odd but I get 2 revolutions as being .206 so maybe around 10 tpi but I have a feeling it might be metric. |

You can get a rubber stopper at any marine supply store like West Marine or similar. Or the boat section at Wal-Mart. |

If all else fails you can find various size plugs at your local XXX shop! |

Not sure I can go look if you really need me too but I am thinking that a screw in type plastic plug from a boat is about the same size. Just a thought.... |

What about one of those rubber freeze out plugs from Napa or Autozone. Get one about the right size and then tighten as needed. It's a temp fix at best but it should work. |

I just got off the road after 300 miles. I get to Savannah, GA and notice my dipstick is gone too! No clue when it had come out. Anbody local to Savannah - Fort Stewart that may have an extra or know of a dealer in the area? I gotta find a solution by tuesday morning to get me back to Fort Bragg. Thanks for your help! |

Too funny brumbear, I doubt a fellow bueller would do that. Surely sucks tho. I don't know how much oil I'd lost or even how much to add! Until I can get an alternative fix does anybody know of a crude way to measure my oil level? Maas562, have you found a solution yet? |

Maybe this info is helpful to check your oil level with something else than the dipstick!? http://www.buellforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t= 14834 |

@ Brothers in Buells - thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for. I called the most local dealer which happens to be in Jacksonville, FL. Being an army guy, I know lots of people at lots of locations, Jacksonville being the closest Buell dealer... Figures that the closest dealer with my part is the closest to MY own home in NC!!! Looks like I'm gonna use rudimentary measurements and a cork/rubber plug alternative and some slick measurements and get myself home. Please, please, please if somebody has a better alternative, I'm all ears! Thanks again y'all!!! |

American Sport Bike sells a really cool dipstick that has a built in temp gauge. It's pricey, but a good quality product. Originally made by Dark Horse Moto, now has the American Sport Bike logo on it. Fits right in there...I'd post a link but their site is down for maintenance right now. -TK |
