Hey all, just picked myself up an 04 xb12r with 8k on it. I'm new to Buells but not motorcycles. The thing runs fantastic imo the feel and sound alone is worth every penny.. But seeing as i've owned nothing but japanese bikes i still feel a little worried that i'm looking over something that could be wrong. Any suggestions/major known problems to look out for? What's recommended as i just ticked over 8k and the odo? anyway any input would be greatly appreciated and i look forward to reading the feedback!

Congrats on the bike. Like anything else, if you take care of it, it'll take care of you. Welcome to BadWeb. There's a lot of info here, so enjoy looking. I still find new, cool stuff every day. I have an '07, so most of the hiccups were worked out by the time my bike came around. If your bike is stock, keep it that way and enjoy it the way it was meant to be. Welcome and enjoy!!

off the top of my head, things to keep in mind when coming from jap bikes

the transmission and the engine oil are seperate

you adjust the clutch cable not at the lever perch but near the front of the motor

the bike has a mix of both metric and SAE parts. so make sure that you have both kinds of sockets and allen bits.

harley and sportbike riders will hate you. look for BMW riders to hang out with.

thats all i can think of for now

No they are not. I use amsoil 20/50 in the engine and Harley Formula 1+ in the primary

I've heard you can use the eng oil in both but it is different.

I run the same stuff in both holes. Amsoil claims it is safe to run there stuff in both holes so I have been since I changed to amsoil and i have had no problems. Infact I think does better than that formula + that harley makes.

There is anecdotal evidence that using synthetic oils like Mobil 1 gear oil, may cause premature failure of the stator due to deterioration of the wiring.

That is why many experienced Buelligans recommend Formula +.

In addition, many engine oils have friction modifiers which are not appropriate for use with a clutch.

yes but motorcycle oils are designed not to have those friction modifiers in them cause most motorcycles use one oil for everything

I looked up the part number from the buell manual in google for the transmission oil and amsoil popped up. . . probably the same thing and amsoil just rebrands it for Harley

which is cheaper??? hell if formula + is cheaper I'll use that, fricking $60 for 4 quarts of oil . . . amsoil sobs but they do sponsor Geoff May in AMA so . . . maybe it's worth it

The anecdotal evidence was also from using oils that were not specifically made for motorcycles like the Vtwin or 4T oils.

Dont start you bike until you are ready to take off. very big no no with these bikes. Take off easy from a light if its hot out and you were sitting a while or you will hear it ping.
