My brakes are pulsing at 10000 miles. In the air on a jack when I spin the front tire there are grabby spots. Tried cleaning the rotor to no avail. I really don't want to buy a new rotor every 10000 miles, is this a common problem ?

Did you check run out on the wheel? Tape a point to each fork to use as a reference and look to see if there is a lot of run out in the wheel, then move the pointer to the rotor and see which one is the damaged part.

I dont understand what you mean. Its acting just like a warped car rotor. When not braking its handling great. pulses lightly on braking. I just bought pads so you can see Im pretty easy on the brakes.

Changing pad compounds can help quite a bit in many cases, and switching to an Erik Buell Racing 6mm rotor solves the problem.

I take it its thicker? I didnt realize some of the 1125 stuff fit the xbs! Will have 2 look into that.

Can the stock rotor be turned?

If you replace the disk, the Erik Buell Racing disk mounting kit is also a must-have.

The site is down for inventory for the rest of May, anyone remember how much that one is ? American Sport Bike has a thicker one for $235...ouch. It does come with all the mounting hardware.

The pulsing is a bit of a common problem, and most of the time is due to the pads leaving deposits on the rotor and mounting hardware. Depending on the severity it can be cleaned off. Using the rear brake to hold your bike at stops instead of the front can prevent this from happening again. I have over 100,000 miles on multiple ZTL Buells, had an issue early on with my 06 Uly, changed my habit, it went away and I've never felt pulsing since. Most of my bikes are running original rotors and pads.

That's a great idea. I've tried to clean them with brake cleaner and a green pad which helped a little. Maybe an abrasive gasket pad (takes gasket off of heads)in those spots might help but the rotor isn't exactly smooth anyways so a new one is in order. I think the Erik Buell Racing 6mm with new pads and your idea about using the rear brake will be the solution. Heck, I need a new front tire anyways.......

That clears it up some. Any tips for removing the front tire off the bike ? I'll go by the shop manual, of course, but sometimes somebody has a useful tip.....

If your bike has the 6 pot ZTL1 caliper, it takes less effort to remove the wheel than the 8 pot ZTL2 like shown.

that was a clever video .... but, remove 4 bolts for the fender or 2 bolts for the caliper , i think i'll go with the 2 bolts .

I just take the fender bolts of the right leg on my XB12X.

It's A LOT easier than my X1 front wheel.

I have 55,000 on my 2003 XB9S with the original front brake rotor. The bike has seen several track days and races in the CMRA. Still no pulsing.

As long as you stay away from organic pads you shouldn't get any pulsing in the front brake system.

i'm with keith on this one. rotors shouldn't be a 'wear' item like tires or pads are.
now .... there are cases of abuse/neglect, but it should last until the pads wear on the rotor to the point it has reached it's minumum thickness of 0.18 inches/4.5 mm
someone wanna back me up on that minimum thickness?

Obviously there's a difference between 'shouldn't' and 'can't'. From what I'm reading proper break in and use will dictate your experience. I will change both my break in and use and hopefully be in 'your camp' from here on out !
