I know the newer style airbox covers have the vent piece up near the gas cap. my bikes the battle blue of 2003. I was wanting to have that little vent piece on my airbox, but they didn't come stock, and I don't think that they made battle blue air boxes with that vent piece....or did they?

has anybody taken a old scratched/crashed up airbox cover with the vent and cut it off, or detached it, then reattached it to their 03 style air boxes?

There are 2 blue airbox covers with the vent, translucent hero blue and thrust blue.

I have seen a couple modified airbox covers that had Buell lettering cut out where the decals were with some mesh behind it.

i don't really want to go with the hero blue, just due to the fact it wouldn't match the rest of my plastics, is thrust blue the same as the 03 battle blue on my firebolt? or are they different?

i have seen the mesh modified airbox's I've considered doing that, but I'm not sure if i want to go hacking up the one and only airbox i have.....maybe if i come across a second matching airbox I'd give it a try...

The thrust blue is darker. It was stock on the 05's I believe.

Iman if you do let me know how it goes. I have the same issue. though I've been running my 08 with the old style air box and performance wise I didn't notice any differance. But I'd still like the vent.

Do you have a hi flow filter or exhaust?

On the 03's the air made its way to the air box through the hole in the frame so really no need for the top vent.

well the reason i want the vent is b/c i'm going to drill out the the airbox with some holes, but it seems like it'd be more effective if the airbox cover itsself had some venting as well.

and my bike has the race pipe and race ECM on it

and terry is right, the 03s do have the hole in the frame, but hey more fresh cold air is always a plus right!

Please don't drill it. You can buy a cover that clamps the filter down.

This will let you keep the mod reversible.

Also a good time to do the breather mod since it will kind of be required with that cover kit.

I took a scoop from a '06 12R and put it on my battle blue '03 tank..

just gotta cut it off the 12 tank and melt the tabs back on to the new scoop like factory with something hot.

currently no. My Drummer is in bad shape waiting for repair. So I've been running stock again. But I would like to find a vent from a newer airbox to do what Dean did above. So far no luck. I have an old air box I tried to dremel the black piece and was going to put a screen that way, but my dremel skills suck..

hey dean (i like your name....its my last name!)

thanks, that was kind of the answer i was hoping for. And what year decals are those on your air box, the black and silver look good!

Please don't drill it. You can buy a cover that clamps the filter down.

no offense Greg_e, but if i wanted to reverse this mod, i could pick up a used air box for like $30ish vs. $70 plus $10 shipping for the clamp.

however i have already done the breather mod, its a good one for sure, some people say they don't notice anything after doing the mod, but it sure made the low speeds a lot smoother for me!

I just found an old air box that was damaged and just took the scoop and melted it into the new air box (once you have yours off you will see what I mean).

Decals are from an 1125R, forget which year, also got the black "XB9R" emblems from buell.com

I took an older 03 air box and just cut the same size opening as my 07. I didn’t get around to putting mesh underneath, but haven’t had any issues. You can barely see the opening in this picture; I don’t have any better pics. Used a dremel tool, the plastic is soft and melts easy... so be careful if you go this route.

Found some pics, knew they would help someone out some day... this was years ago... hope you can tell what is going on. I had the "cut" one before, but hated how ghetto it looked.

thanks Dean, i did look at mine, and i do see what you mean by "melt it back on" but when you did melt it back on what did you use? it looks like you used something black besides the blue plastic of the airbox?....

yeah very well worth it. I love the on the fly adjustments, i mess with it all the time depending on the riding conditions and what im doing. Great mod!

I think I might have used a plastic epoxy bonding product from SEM. Instead of melting it, sorry about that. Did it years ago.
