I had to switch out my tires today. I went from the Pirelli Diablo Corsa to the Continental M-Force Sport Touring Radial. At the moment I still have the clipons in place where I had them adjusted to. That will change tonight. The pirelli's profile is more rounded then either the Dunlops or my new Conti's. The moment I put the Conti's on the road all of the really bad handling aspects I had been totally expecting with the change in fork height was there. EVERYTHING. Made it a block and brought the bike back carefully and parked it. I truly believe the rounded and taller profile of the Diablo was what made it possible for the bike to handle the way it did with that radical a fork adjustment. I can't wait to get everything back to normal. Anyways I thought I would throw this up here as food for thought with regards to geometry and how profile of the tire can affect it as well. I wish I had gotten a measurement of the Diameter of the Diablo mounted VS the Conti mounted, but unmounted its about 1/4-3/8 of an inch difference in height. I had also noticed the same thing with the Dunlops mounted/unmounted that the height difference was about the same as the Conti, which has a more triangular profile much like the Dunlop. Anyways also, one its all changed back I will give a report on how the Conti's work and what kind of milage I get out of them.

So ....

What would that mean for a normal bike with the Pirelli's against the conti's?

I've been thinking about getting the Pirelli's next, but the cone (or egg or a-spherical) shaped Michelin's has got me doubting.

So if I understand correctly the diablo's profile are more of a sphere than the conti's who are more pointy? And the more round pirelli's worked better for you with the radical fork setup?

Man, I haven't got a clue to how this all works together ... bike geometry to me is like what binary is to an office clerk

The profile of the diablo is more like looking at half a baseball. Nice and round while the Conti and the Dunlop look like that half a baseball smooshed down a bit. Looks more flat.

the metzeler sportecs are just like the pirelli's, i could rub the entire dunlop tire but i have a hard time getting to the very edge of the metzelers.

makes for a smoother transition from straight to a good lean to me though.

Wycked, glad everything worked out to get yourself home OK.
When the first thread came up I was worried.
Reason being, a thread about couter steering.
While counter steering seems to be as hot a topic as oil or mufflers you sometimes come out a bit confused about the facts.
Although I won't go into which oil I use or why, or which muffler is best, or if it's all about counter steering, or weight shift to steer. One thing I do know is that modern motorcycles are built to go in a straight line. If you're going over 20mph and you jump off the bike the bike will do what it's designed to do, countinue upright in a straight line. To make a turn (weather you believe in counter steer or weight shift) what you have to do is upset the geometry of the bike (hopefully in a controled manner) therfore forcing the bike to roll to one side or the other. And by bringing the bike back to normal geometry the bike straightens up and goes straight again. Or bikes are made in such a way (short wheel base, and close to upright forks) makes upsetting the geometry to make a turn is very easy. Giving some (people that write for some magazines), the cause to say things like flickable, or if they don't want to learn the bike, they call it quirky. When I read that you had dropped the tubes I was truly hoping I wouldn't read later on about tank slappers happening to you when you hit some road that had less than smooth pavement.
Glad you learned the hard way with out learning the hard way.
Dave

Glitch if I had hit some truly rough pavement and NOT had tank slappers...I would have taken the bike straight to Buell HQ and asked them to figure out what miricle I had uncovered. I expected it, I expected the pitbull bucking bronco on crack with a habanero enema, instead I got a docile boodhound tracking a scent. It was very smooth and for the first few days unsettling how smooth the bike really was. But to have it go from what it was, to what it is now with just a change in tires...that is what I am amazed at.

I'm not sure if it is just me or the current riding company but we are all of the impression that the OEM tyres are mismatched. Like we can all lean the bike past the edge on the rear till theres nothing left, but the front still has at least an inch of chicken strip and looses first.

heh... my front Michelin Pilot Sport is melted to the very edge. Of course a track day at Barber Motorsports Park helps!

Hmmm...sounds like y'all are falling victim to HDI's contract with Dunlop for both HD and BMC. Oh well, at least they don't last long, eh?

Back to a firebolt triple which steadied the bike back down. The Conti's give more feel then the Dunlops but nother near the Pirelli's. However we are also talking a Sporttouring tire VS a DOT legal Trackday tire.
