I'm putting on an airbox from an older xb without the screen/intake above the fuel cap. I assume I need to get some air flowing in there. Can I just drill lots of holes, or should I dremel and put a screen there? any advice would be great!
Thanks in advance,
Thomas

I've seen the screen thing done and looks good when done well. A screen will flow more air than drilled holes too.

Your 08 pulls a ton of air throught the bottom edges of the outter aribox where it meets the frame. Performance wise it may not make any noticable difference.

the key part being done well...
But it will be fine to ride without it? at least for a few days to a week until I get time to do it?

Worst case you would tend to be a bit rich at WOT. I'm not even sure about that. Just riding around you won't notice any difference. As Krueger points out, there's a surprising amount of area along the bottom edge of the outer airbox.

Remove the black "filler" piece around the fuel cap area, entirely. There are some plastic spot welds on the inside of the cover; just gently grind the tops off. You'll get tons of air, and the filler piece is easily replaceable if you can't live without it aesthetically.

Thanks guys. I rode it around today and didn't notice any difference. But I put the stock pipe back on and I can't hear the exhaust now..seemed to re-learn the stock exhaust after riding for 30 minutes or so,

I think they come original on XB12 bikes, but I'm not sure. The once I've seen look original at least.
Anyone know if they are available from dealers?

unfortuanatly they don"t sell just that one piece. I was hoping to find someone with a busted airbox that would part with it, but doesn't seem like it's going to happen. I guess I'll take the dremel to it this weekend.

Perhaps speaker grill would be a good source?

i could see doing it for asthetics, but ... performance ... seriously ?!?!?

are you effing kidding me? it's not like there's no other place for air to enter.

try this: with the bike running at idle ... NO, at WOT (for good measure) hold a piece of paper over the little holes. then let go and see if it is held in place by the differential pressure ...

please fell free to post your results below

Tape a piece of paper atop cover on my XB-R and once underway it flips over, forward, and flaps around over gas cap: very turbulent air; there.

no, not at all. I really don't know much about it. I figured if it's an airbox designed to take in a specific amount of air, and it comes with an air inlet, maybe the air inlet might be there for a reason. It looked to me like the one the stock airbox was there for a reason. am I wrong? Is it just for looks?

Again, just remove the black "filler" piece around the fuel cap area entirely, and try it. If you don't like the look, you can solve that problem later. If the goal is opening the airflow, that's about as open as you can make it.
