I'm trying to figure out a good w/e ride in Wisconsin, like a fri-sunday thing. I live just north of minneapolis, and have heard good things about some of the backroads over there. Anybody have any good suggestions? Maybe decent places to stay and good eats along the way?

Just east of Madison there are plenty of excellent county roads. I have heard that from La Cross to Madison, going by Wildcat Mountain State Park, is considered Wisconsin's Dragon. I am not sure of the exact roads, maybe someone else knows. 33 looks good, but I don't think that is it.

Hwy 33 east of Hillsboro is where the wildcat lives. It's a great road that I need to get back to soon. I've heard Mindoro Cut is a good one too, but I haven't been there yet. Check out this site: http://www.wisconsinmotorcycling.com/maps/mindoro. html

Took a trip out to the LaCrosse area a couple of months ago. Great riding anywhere between Madison and LaCrosse and also Across the river. Our trip got cut very short when my wife misjudged a curve at Mindoro cut and got into the gravel on the shoulder. She was OK, but her bike bent the shifter shaft in the trans. We were able to limp it home the next day, but it wasn't working right at all. We will be heading back out that way though.

"Steak with an Attitude" in the bar at Hooker's Resort. (Dekorra) the AYCE walleye on fridays in the resturaunt is REALLY good, too.

there's a place in Mindoro that offers 108 hamburgers on the menu. i haven't ate there yet, but i plan on going to find it on wed.

Cimaroli's supper club in Briggsville (127 north of Portage) was amazing. drinks, appetizers, (try the crab spread thing) flat iron steaks and shrimp, more drinks, and a fat tip - $50.

as for the riding...any alphabet road in the general area of viola/viroqua. i ride out that way on a regular basis, and i don't think i've ever had to take the same route twice.

the western half of the state has more curvy than straight. from Lake Wisconsin, you can go north as far as St.Croix, and as far west as the Mississippi, and it's possible to not see a significant straight line all day.

Tourist Trap: Wisconsin Dells. lots of good food, friendly places to stay, and other things to do while not on a motorcycle. ride the Ducks, take a boat trip, knock the bumper off a go-kart. don't forget to try the fudge! i haven't gone in years, but breakfast at Paul Bunyon's Camp Kitchen is enough to give you a food coma for the whole morning.

have fun! <hotrod, aka puffi

I've heard the county roads in WI described like Sesame Street on mescaline.

I lead a ride in WI once and the folks I was with all said "That was a great route... How did you find all of that?" I was just zipping along making turns wondering where I would be when I found something I knew.

Thanks for all the great help guys! Metra and Puffinstuff Have VERY good info! We really appreciate it!I think we have what we need to plan a w/e corner carvin' trip now! Got good joints to eat, sleep shouldn't be a big issue, but a route trip and timed events have already entered the planning stages!

Well, since it was a beautiful day, and I didn't have any plans, I figured I would do a 300 mile ride to see what 33 was like. I rode from West Bend to Ontario and back, 33 the whole way, except for Co Rd FF between Hillsboro and Wonewoc, which I recommend.

Here is the best part (not me):

Just stay away from Mt. Tabor. Every time I've been there my bike ended up on the ground. The Blast was nicknamed the "One Row Cornpicker" after a trip to Tabor. Did you get cheese curds in Hillsboro? And the Hustle Inn in Hustler has pretty good pizza.

Nah, when you live in WI, you can get fresh cheese curds anywhere. I do love me some dill/garlic curds!

yesterday was a biggie.

starting in Dekorra, we got a piece of the great river road, the mindoro cut, and wildcat mountain all in one day. with a new rider in tow.

we had a small fire due to a just-added electrical component on a GS850, giving us the only injury of the ride, my slightly burned finger.

lost a running light and the O-ring for the oil filler cap on a newly purchased 900 Virago. (the new guy.) took an extra hair tie out of my bag, doubled it up, and wrapped it around the cap. add pliers and a 1/2 qt of oil, problem fixed well enough to get home.

rear tire on my Ss crapped out 10 minutes south of the cut. this slowed our roll considerably.

headlight burned out (GS850) in Sparta. quick trip to auto parts store to replace burned bulbs on two bikes.

just as we rolled into Ontario, the low beam on the suzi went out again. that's what he gets replacing the bulb w/o fixing the problem. i warned him.

all the way from Ontario to Portage, the suzi's lights are going dim, then brighten back up again. we found the pos battery post was loose. wrapped it in the wire taken from the previously mentioned and recently removed electrical component, which kept it from moving around. no more variable-amperage lighting.

we never did make it all the way to the town of mindoro to find that burger spot. but, i have a new tire waiting for me, and we are planning another ride to clear up this little omission.

all things considered, a great ride. i rate it 4 stars, 2 gophers and a chicken.

This summer on the way to Lake Superior, we went north out of La Crosse on US 53, then took state highway 93 to Arcadia and Independence to Eau Claire.
Not much there for twisties i guess, but there's a lot of good views.

H to Webb Lake from 70. A phenomenal accidental find. The cut is great but, you can run H at considerable speed. That Wildcat run looks fun.
