I have a 06 Uly that makes a heck of a "muted bell" sound when warm. When it is not in gear it sounds normal, no tappet clicking no nothing. Once in gear and moving it gets a sound of someone hitting a hollow metallic tube of some weight. Motor off, no sound moving it. Motor running, warm, not in gear no sound. One the motor is running, in gear and moving the sound is back above 1,500rpm's. It performs just as good as it always did - I am at a loss!?!?!?

How is it shifting?
Is it also making that noise when only in gear with the clutch pulled in? (so you are not moving)

This thread attracted my attention because of the reference to nickles...

My XB always sounded like a blender full of nickles to me... for almost 50k miles before I traded her for property tax money.

Just saying.

Is it a new sound, like you never noticed it before?

mine sounded like a bag full of nickels when I was using partially synthetic motor oil, I recently put in this fully synthetic R6 truck engine extreme temperature oil and it doesn't sound like a bag full of nickels (IE no more valve train sound)

Dino oil

The Uly has been on a steady 20/50 Castrol diet, changed every 3k.

With the clutch in in gar there is no sound. The sound only comes when I get over 1500rpms and stops around 4k. There is no rattle when I reve the motor or while at speed pull the clutch. Thatis what drives me nuts, it is none of the typical sound made by a V twin
that is about to blow. It runs like a scalded cat and gets good milage (51mpg). The bike has 30k on the clock.

Could it be the shaft nut is loose in the primary?

The sound was there before I changed to 9 primary. The clutch and crank nut are 240/80 foot pounds respectively with gobs of red LockTight. I recently reopened the primary to double check that thought.

Truck oil, now there is a thought! The Uly is due for a oil change, 200 miles from now, so I just might try some. I do not think it is a "terminal" sound so two days of commuting should get me there. The trick now is to find a 20/50 truck oil; TX heat demands the 50!

I run 20/50 in the summer, and 15/40 in the colder part of the riding season. I'm going to go with the 15/40 all the time. It runs a bit cooler with it even in summer. After the bike is fully warmed up, it sounds better. Citgo makes all these oil grades. They are labeled turbo/diesel. I change my oil every 2k or so.

I was thinking of Rotella 10/40. I have used that oil in my Triumph Scrambler and Suzuki DR650. Might give it a shot in the Uly. Can do no more than keep rattling.

My xb12 started doing the muted bell thing as well, but I also notice it going over harsher bumps. Any other ideas on what it could be??

My XB made a scary rattley noise that I finally wrote off...one day I was removing the footpeg hangers. I found the metal undertray under the seat was very loose and had been rattling ....tightened up everything...rattle gone...

Full nut and bolt check every 5k. A big piston, long stroke, torque monster v-twin will loosen anything after time.
Buells aren't nearly as bad as Harleys but still need the wrench more then most bikes.
And with 2 XB's, a 9 with 12k and 12 with 2k they still make the nickel sound, It's normal, and I kinda like that way. ; )

Write it off until boom time

I will just change to Rotella truck oil and write the sound off to " a Buell thing". If she blows she blows if not even better. I have five bikes in the stable and one going boom will not end life; good excuse to start looking at a 2012 XR1200X!

A few years ago, when I was new to Buells, I nearly went crazy wondering what was making all the noise. I'm on my second now, and have ridden others. That experience along with the following quote from a reviewer at motorcycle.com have finally put me at ease...


"We usually wear earplugs to muffle wind and exhaust noise, but with the Buell, we use them to squelch the odd sounds akin to churning broken glass and marbles coming from below. Seriously, the engine sounds like a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower with a dozen bolts loose..."

Well ,the noise on my bike was not there for 50 000kms. so I am a little concerned with it . I guess a stethoscope, some wrenches and beer and I`ll eventually find it!
