The older airbox design seems to be very good as a fresh air intake system . Would I really benefit from a newer airbox lid ?

the newer one would allow you to get even more air. especially if you add a newer airbox cover as well.

another alternative would be to just drill holes in the one you airbox you already have. Or for that matter cut everything off except the top of the air cleaner

From what I've gathered from previous posts on the topic, the 2007 airbox works better than a randomly drilled one. There's apparently some science to it.
