So what are the benefits or losses from running an XB12 header on and XB9 motor. Stock 9 muffler will be used. Trying to decide which header to wrap and prep. I don't want to have any issues with the ECM from a switch and don't really want any losses anywhere as I'm pretty happy with the power through the band. Not really in the mood to do a bunch of datalogging and tuning at the moment.

I asked the same question awhile back. According to what I could find you would have to do some serious tuning to the ecm. You would need at minimum a NB in the front and rear cylinder to monitor the new header. However, It can be done and from what xopti was saying it can and will increase power/torque if done correctly.

+1.heard there needs tgo be serious ECMspy work to avoid low-down loss. Here's a little info here

Have you tried looking at the aftermarket equal-length XB headers? Or seen the Micron Serpent exhaust system? Both are expensive, but I know the Micron isn't made and hard to find.

By that post I'd be losing low rpm performance but would gain up near redline.

I currently have the 9 header on the bike, I also have a used 12 header that I bought to put on while I was wrapping the 9 header. Just trying to see if it would make sense to just wrap the 12 header and use is so I don't have to swap twice.

If this is a street bike...leave the 9 header in place. Except for the "oh my, cool" factor, the engine will like it's own header better...performance wise.

Race bike...maybe a different question.

I agree with 1_mike, it would have been cheaper for Buell to manufacture one header but they took the time to make two different ones for a reason.

OK, so it seems that for street with stock muffler I should put the 12 on just so I can keep riding it while I deal with the 9 header, then put the 9 back on for normal use.

I'm curious as to how it's going to run, please keep us posted.
Remember though, it'll take a little bit for the bike to "learn" what's going on.

Sounds pretty sick, but it is Xoptis bike so some serious tuning went into that sucker : )

Maybe contact him about a tune if you plan on putting the 12 header on!

That one has a nonstock muffler so it would really need a tune. I might drop him a message and ask what he thinks, but either way it will almost certainly get done when I get brave enough to try and remove the rusted nuts and studs. The front looks good, but the rear is solid rust. Might work on it this weekend because the parts for my turn signals and new clutch cable are here.

Greg, while your PB Blasting the screws, use a small wire brush to get the rust off and open up new places for the PB to penetrate. I would blast and scrub them for a few days, or at least a few times till you see metal again. Just keep in mind that when you knock the surface rust off with the brush, it will allow the PB to get in there farther.

Hmmm.... Starting to sound like rotating the engine again, probably no real choice if I want to make certain I get the job done. Have to find a very low jack I can use, maybe one with a pin or plate I can bolt to the front muffler clamp mount. Have to read the book to see what I'm going to need to do.

Greg, theres a header thread a few up that has a write-up on removing it without rotating the engine. Doesn't seem very hard. I know BudC knows how to do it. You have to disconnect the rear shock and the fan.

Doesn't seem hard to you think about the rusted studs and that I should probably replace them while I'm doing the work.

ok, Xoptis' bike does sound pretty sick. What kind of muffler does he have? I have a XB12S and want to do a pipe. A friend has a DrummerS and I like it but would like something different than his.
