Ok, I'm going to tighten the sprocket nut on my 03 xb9r tonight or tomorrow. I now I need a new primary gasket. Is there anything else I should do while I'm in there? Also are there any other gaskets or seals I should replace?

The million dollar question what kind of fluid should I put in there. I know everyone has a preference but I would like to hear what they are.

I use Syn 3. I may try Mobil 1 next time.

The Buell/HD suggestion is to use Formula + in the primary. Syn 3 is for the engine. Mix at your own risk.

The manual tells you to change the gasket (good idea), and since yours is an 03, I'd pick up the gaskets for the derby cover (where you add oil), and the chain tension window...or whatever it's called. You're also supposed to change the shifter seal/bushing, but I never have. YMMV.

I used to put Mobil 1 in the primary, but I would recommend against it.

Speculation on this very board has led me to believe Mobil 1 can damage the stator leading to it's failure. I went thru 3 stators on my XB on one on my Sporty while using it, zero since switching to Formula +. YMMV.

Syn 3 is for the engine...

IIRC, HD says SYN 3 is good for use in the primaries of Buell and Sportster models. Never used it myself though.

I recommend checking out your primary chain tensioner for excessive wear while you're in there.

IIRC, it's on the 10,000 mile check list. Mine was barely out of spec at 13,000 miles. Think it was a $24 part.

Last time I changed primary oil, I went with service manual specs, so maybe I did put the Formula+. I have heard mixed results about the Mobil 1 doing funny stuff to the stator, but one failure is more than none, so I'll stick with the stuff I regularly use. I don't remember if it was Formula+, or Syn3, but it was what they told me to get at the parts counter. For the engine it's 15-40 diesel oil, changed at 2000 mi.

WILL THE MADNESS EVER END???

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH USING MOBIL 1 MOTOR OIL IN THE PRIMARY!!!

The problem is with GL-5 Gear Oils!!!

NOTHING to do with Mobil 1...

There are too many choices in oils to use - Syn3, Forumla +, Mobil 1 15-50, Royal Purple. To make it simple, just stay away from GL-5 oils...

Just to clarify, my experience is with Mobil 1 75w90 Gear Oil in the primary, not Motor Oil. No need to yell dude. : )

Mobil 1 Oil causes genital warts

By pwnzor
Associated Press Writer

The World Health Organization and the US Center for Disease control have issued a joint statement today, citing a new scientific study. The subjects involved in the experiment were found to contract genital warts when pleasuring themselves with Mobil 1 oil products. Only 17% of control subjects using placebo oils were found to contract the warts while a staggering 88% got the warts from using the Mobil 1 products.

Bill Clinton has been dispatched to the region to further aid the progress of the study, while Obama, Biden, Pelosi and Reid have gone missing. There is some speculation at this time that the new communist leaders of the once-free nation of Amerikastan have contracted terminal cases of these warts and have retreated to their bunkers.

Hillary Clinton was not available for comment. Film at 11.

well I decided to go with the Formula +. Now on to the bad news, the noise is still there after tightening the nut. So it looks like I will be taking it in to have the shop to get an opinion on what it can be.

Luxor, sorry i didn't say anything before. well it has a noise sounds like a knock or rattle if you will. I have had two other Buell before none of them had this noise I hear. So I have did some searching and found that the noise I heard sounded like what people with a loose primary nut coming loose described. So I torked it to the specs. I adjusted the primary chain cold so my next step is adjusting while it’s hot. On a side note I listened to about 15 clips of Buell’s running and I have heard a similar noise on about half of them. So I don’t know what’s going on at this point.
