On my way to work today the needle on my Tachometer started bouncing wildly while at constant rpms. I assume it is a loose wire..... Any ideas of what I should look at 1st? I will have a limited amount of day light once I get home and any headstart you can give me will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Could be a loose wire but just as likely it’s a chaffed wire harness. Look at the harness where it comes out of the ECM. Check for wear around the battery’s negative terminal. Had the same issue on my bike. |

First check the battery terminals for tightness, next look at the wire harness at the steering head. You will have to unwrap it. There are two splices where three wires come into one. They are right there where they bend from turning. The splices are in a heat shrink cover with a wax like sealer. You have to open up the shrink to see if the wire is actually broken off. Mine did that kind of stuff for weeks longer than it needed to because I was hesitant about opening that heat shrink joint it looked and felt fine. The red wires are the power leads for the items in the fly screen area including the instrument cluster. The brown wire splice that can suffer the same fate in that location are for the right turn signals. |

I didn't find any damaged wiring. I did find a fuse that had almost vibrated out of it's holder. I also Checked the battery terminals for tightness and unplugged the harness from the instrument panel and plugged it back in. I wasn't able to go for a ride but when I fired it up and rev'd it a bit the tach seemed to be working correctly. If it acts up on the way to work tomorrow I will open up the shrink wrap like Etennuly suggested. Thanks again for the help. |
