Was out riding my new-to-me 05 9SX, and when I came home and shut down, power died. Key was still in, but lights/gauges all went dead, fan died, and the bike wouldn't restart. Figured it was a bad connection somewhere, so pulled off the saddle to look around. Battery terminals were good, fuses were all good too, so I thought the battery had just died. Hooked up the voltmeter, and as soon as I touched the second terminal, everything came back on, bike even started again, but clock/trip odo's got reset. Had the battery tested, passed all the tests, and was reading 13V. I checked for chaffed wires near the fuses/battery, everything looked good, and it seems odd that it would die when I shut down, then work again when I hooked up the voltmeter. Any thoughts?

On an unrelated note, after the power died, the bike seemed stuck in first gear, even when it fired up again, it didn't like getting out of first and into neutral. Any thoughts here too? It was running fine on my ride, shifting with no issues.

I wouldn't think the shifting and electrical are related.

I would check by battery cable connections to the bike. Check negative at the frame terminal. Loosen it, wiggle it and tighten it back up again. Follow the positive to the starter and do the same.

There are some safety considerations to keep in mind.

Ya I'm assuming that they aren't related either...just a really crappy coincidence I guess...

Checked the connects quickly last night, looked good, but I'll give em another once over tonight.

Remover the ground wire sand it at the frame and the battery + do the positive side at the bat but make shure you remove the bolt not just retight.

3 harness spots to check...

harness at the ecm rubbing under the seat

harness rubbed through on the shock fluid line

harness chaffed on horn cross bracket

+1 on sanding battery and chassis ground. Battery connections should be copper color!

your symptoms are related to a bad ignition switch as well. wiggle your key while in on position and see if your gauges loose power.
