Hey, got a quick question about tire cupping and since it's about the stock XB tires and the Knowledge Vault topic about tires is locked I'll post it here.
I"ve got almost 5000 miles on my 12R. I was looking at the front tire and it's not smooth in the center. It seems the tread is a bit 'wavy' around the tread design. It's not bad but if you run your hand over it and you can feel it. I first noticed it while I was looking at the tread depth and noticed you could depress the center of the tire a bit. I haven't noticed any handling issues, is this normal??? I know it's hard to describe but did I get my point across??? It's in the center third of the tread. I"ve had my cruiser front tire 'cup' but that was after many miles and it was more towards the side of the tread and it looked more like wear marks on an unbalanced tire.
Maybe this in normal and I just haven't noticed it before.
The reason I ask is I was going to put on another Dunlop (208) rear and then after wearing them down replace both with Diablos and try them... I'm considering I'll be using 2 rears to each front...Any ideas???

kevin that seems pretty normal to me. my front is getting that way after only 1050 miles. all my sportster fronts have done that , notice it after around 2000 miles on the harley. if its behaving itself i think you are ok.

the three times I've run into this on three different bikes two different brands of tires, all three dealers blamed underinflation. The tire guy at the track told me the same thing......I'm not sure I buy it..... my tires always have air in them

I think that's normal wear on the Dunlop fronts, haven't noticed it with the Diablos.

sounds like you need to check your air pressure more often.
temp change will change pressure.
pressure flux will cup tires.

FWIW: 3500 miles on my front D208 with no cupping. My first D207 was cupping slightly at about 7000 miles (lasted 7500). The Avon Venom X on the front of my Harley has 19,000 miles on it with no cupping at all (almost worn out though)

Thanks Guys... I'm doubtful it's an air pressure problem. I checked the pressure every week for the first couple of months and now I check it every few weeks. I've never had it go down much more than a pound or so...

I had a BT020 cup severely after 3000 miles on my XB. I initially blamed it on my heavy braking riding style in the twisties. There's a Metzeler Z4 up front now and it looks a lot better.
