I just bought my bike a 2009 XB12Scg black. once again thanks for the tips on the price I did not get the blue one, but I am riding one now. Paid 10617 out the door.

How do I break in the the bike and for how long? Thanks I have 40 miles on it now.

Thanks for all the input I can get,

Thanks Rich

Wither you decide to follow it or not, the recommended directions are in your manual.

I was always told to break it in like you are going to ride it all the time

But that does not mean that it is right

I ignored the manual and broke mine in by riding it hard (the motoman method)--that was 4 years and over 25K km ago, and it's run strong the whole time and doesn't burn a drop of oil. I can admit that I didn't follow the manual now it's off warranty...

Don't be bouncing off the rev limiter before the 500 mile mark, take her easy. But ride it like you would normally, ranging your rpms.

+1 to everyone. I am not a believer of lugging around for 1000 miles like the manf says but I also dont go out and do a methodical break in like motoman.

I road my bike for 50 miles with very low rev's, usually around 3,500rpm tops. That was mostly because it was a brand new bike to me with brand new tires and I was riding home 40 miles in the rain : p.

Then I started just riding it like I would normally, moderate acceleration, rev's to 4,000-4,500. As I got a couple hundred miles on it I would do some harder WOT accelerations to 5,000rpm and then after I got over 600 or so I just started beating on it. I think they say 90 percent of the break in is on the first 50 or so miles and the rest is mostly in the first 1000 miles.

From around 700 to now (almost 1100 miles, getting ready for the 1000 mile service and synthetic oil) I have been riding it fairly hard in the mountains, almost always over 4,000rpm and to redline a handful of times.

My 05 I got from Danbury had about 200 feet of recommended break in (parking lot). I beat that thing like a red headed stepchild for 17 thousand miles and it never had an issue. It only took a Blue Toyota and a nice highside at 80+ mph to bring it down, although it still ran perfect after that. Change fluids at recommended interval but for all else I wouldnt worry about it. Ride the balls off it and enjoy it

Break it in like your gonna ride it. Just make sure you always give it a couple minutes to warm-up.

Warm it up properly before a ride.

Ride back roads, where you're naturally on/off throttle and up/down thru the gears. Just don't get on the highway and ride for hours and hours at one speed. If you have to slab it, use the squirt/coast method, and go up and down from 4th to 5th and back when you can.

First 50 miles be gentle. 50-500 ride like a normal, sane person - don't use the rev limiter as a shift indicator. 500, break-in is done; first service scheduled at 1000.
