i nosed over and flopped it,lots of minor damage.(scratches)went to get an estimate from the local hd dealer and got it all done,but was charged 85 bux for it.
is this normal?
so i got my stuff faxed off and now to wait and see how it goes.always always always get full coverage!hahahaha
but i have been a good customer with my insurance for 21 years now.

Sounds like they charged you an hour for labor. Pretty sorry if you ask me!

Yup. It's normal. It still takes time off the clock to perform that job. The shop's I'VE dealt with have all credited that amount BACK to me if I had them perform the repair afterwards. In these economic times though, who knows?

The Honda/Kaw shop I worked at in the '70s charged up front for repair estimates. Cheerfully deducted from the bill if the repair was done at our shop.
This was selectively enforced on a case by case basis.
The '70s, yup, tough times then too...

That is normal at autobody shops also. Alot of people use up their time and materials (damage est. paperwork) just to get the required forms for the insurance money, with no intention of ever having the work done. Like was said before, most shops will credit that fee back to you if they do the repairs.

Exactly, most places will refund, or credit their diagnostic fees if you have them perform the repairs.

Nothing wrong with charging for an estimate at all IMO.

I work at an autobody shop and we do estimates free of charge. Same goes for the other 3 shops I've worked at in the past. Come to think of it, I don't know of a shop in the area that charges for an estimate.

i do autobody work,in the denver area,never heard of charging for an estimate. but no big deal,seriously how many bike guys get a detailed estimate and waste the shop time and then just fix it or not fix it and the parts are sourced from e bay?
so i understand,and insurance will pay for it.no biggie.
so another question
is my helmet covered? if had some minor scratches,there was no impact,just scratched on the gravel as i fell off bike.i had no bumps or anything,just scratched up bike grrrrrr

Should be covered, is by mine at least...scratches mean it touched ground and should be replaced. It covers your brain so I play it safe with helmets.

The real question is... how did you not know it was going to cost you money? I'm detecting a worrisome trend here of people giving their bikes to dealers and basically handing them a blank check. It is the customer's responsibility to get in writing, in advance, everything that the dealer intends to do with the vehicle in question. It should also be in writing that the dealer cannot exceed X amount of money without the owner's consent. The dealerships are not going to offer this information to the customer- you have be informed before you enter the repair facility. I personally have had work done for free and had discounts applied because I filled out the RO fully, and the service rep did not even notice. However, the service manager noticed the rep's oversight when comping my bill.

When I as rear ended on the crotch rocket they wanted $85 for the estimate and then took that off when I got the check from the other guys insurance and paid them.

well,i plan on doing my own work,as much as i can .most of my damage is minor,so that is a no brainer.and for all of u who have never dealt with insurance,get your best estimate from whatever dealer u want,and then get with ur insurance co.i went and got a start on mine by having the parts guy look up about 90% of the parts i thought i'd need,the writer guy found more.i gave him my parts list to assist,now i call my insurance and they come look and then we do the check.since i own mine outright,i *should* get the check free and clear.if not,i drop it off once the parts are there and a portion is is given to order the parts.the rest will be COD.
i also think i'll toss the parts guy a bone,i bet the writer will get any commission, and no sense in the parts guy wasting his time.i was thinking of a outback gift card or something.who ever said there is no such thing as a free lunch LOL

Our shop charges an hour labor for damage estimates on bikes as well.

It takes time to check all the parts of a bike and be responsible about it and to cover the rear end of the shop.

Which bike was it that was damaged? the rr from your profile?

Dealers charge for an hour of labor because they have a factory trained technician look your bike over for any and all damages to your bike. They dont send the service writer out to do it because they do not know what to look for. This hour of time covers the tech.I am sure you would not like to work for an hour and not get paid for it.

i do bodywork for a living...i do plenty of free junk.i also make up for it with being very productive and fast when i can.
i guess car shops get so much volume of work the free estimate is an expense that is absorbed. they also wont do such a detailed estimate either,they "hook" the customer and then the bodyman corrects all the missed work and hopefully get paid for it.
