I know many of you received your education in your own garage, but I was just wanting to get everyone’s opinion on formal mechanics schools like MMI and AMI .

How is the quality of curriculum and instructors?
Where is the most bang for the buck?
Which is most relevant to Buell and H-D?
Who on the board are current students or alumni?

MMI is the only AUTHORIZED and factory backed school for H-D/Buell. I am a brand spankin' new MMI student but hit me up with this question in a year when I am in the late model H-D program

I went to MMI but like anyschool you only get out of it what you put into it. If you apy more attention to all things motorcycle and not just the hd stuff you'll come out better.

I don't know about the buell program it wasn't there when I was. just had to figure it for myself. some of it obviously transfered over.

but in hd you'll never learn about suspension unsprung weight and the like that you need in dealing with buells.

and of you think you are ever gonna get rich doing this kinda work think again. you better have a lot of love in it.

more than half our techs here went to MMI

They have changed the formatting somewhat. Now everyone takes the basics that covers the things that all bikes have in common then you split off into the specialized courses. For me H-D is the main focus with a couple of courses at the end to cover the imports.

Just for information sake, I'd like to here from anyone that completed a motorcycle mechanics school, within the last 3 years.

Things I'd like to know are;

1. What it cost you specifically?

2. Was it worth the cost?

3. What was the quality of instruction?

4. Pro(s) and Con(s) you experienced.

BTW, I don't buy the statement "you get what you put into it", that applies to anything in life, even learning on your own without attending school. As expensive as the tech, vocational or specialized schools are, the instruction should be incomparable to traditional institutions. Over the years I’ve taught at vocation schools, tech schools, junior colleges and Arizona State University. From my personal experience, trade schools in the construction related fields or any of the CAD or graphics disciplines are complete rip offs. The instructors or facility members are simply not qualified.

what I meant was pay attention those first 6 months when you are working on the jap bikes. and ask so many question that you get on their nerves (make them earn Their money)

as far as instructures go its like anything some are better than others.

was it worth it. Sure it was it got me where I wanted to be.

the cost was about 13k.

most hd dealerships won't hire anymore if you haven't graduated from MMI unless you know somebody there. or have years of experience elsewhere.

pro's Learned more than I thought I would.

rich little immature 18 to 20 year old kids there on mom and dads money screwing around in class and breaking tools that I needed to use to get stuff done.

and old school harley teachers that talked down about buells.
and you know me....I had to give them my $10 worth and get myself in some hot water occassionaly. But it all worked out.

but as I said before "you do get what you put into it" if you go in and do the minimal to get by thats what you get out of it.
