Hey guys,
Just curious, if I put an aftermarket pipe on my 9, will I need to adjust the ECM? If so, how do I go about doing that? As you can tell, I'm very new to this and need all the advice I can get. I'm looking into a Drummer and was wanting to know what all is involved with installation. If I were to go with the Jardine, would I need to mess with the ECM as well?

Thanks!
Matt

The Drummer is a awesome muffler. You can run it without a race ECM. Meaning you can run it with the stock ECM. It would be better though to run the race ECM. Many here are running the stock units without problems.

Oh, ok, so all I'd have to do is bolt on the Drummer and go? I could always upgrade the ECM later I suppose.

The reason I said you'd be better off with the Race ECM is because the Air/fuel mixture is better but the stock unit can learn.

So if I were to install a slip on and leave the ECM and air filter alone, would my bike be ok? I don't want to run it too lean or anything.

yes it will be "ok", but dont believe that you are getting the most for what you bought.
You are changing what the ecm knows and changing the rate at which the bike can exhale. You can run the stock ecm just fine, you just have to have the numbers and programs adjusted to what you do.
You could slip the same drummer onto three different bikes, and you would have to make three different ecm adjustments, NO BIKE is EXACTLY the same, period.

You can run with just the bolt on, but to really get what you paid for, you absolutely need to adjust the ecm. It can learn, but it cant adjust that much.

* I like drummers product, but when he started feeding me that it's just bolt on and go, and its perfect... I thought I would do my research and not listen to a guy trying to sell me something. Just my two cents. Ended up NOT buying his product, what else is he saying?

Good point. So if I get a slip on, I would also need a race ECM and a high flow air filter as well? Also, how do I "adjust" the ECM?

Thanks,
Matt

Well Alex I can say this much. Kevin Drum is a stand up man of his word. The man fields a race bike that does very well in standing's running his product with a Stock ECM. You may want research some more to be honest.

Hey Bads,
So based on what you're telling us, I could add a slip on and a high flow air filter using the stock ECM and still be fine?

Okay, Bads1, you've confused me. Earlier you said it would be fine, then you say it won't be.

which one is it and why?

Matt, asked this.

So if I were to install a slip on and leave the ECM and air filter alone, would my bike be ok?

I said fine to running with a unmodified stock filtered airbox. Then he came back ask about a filter. Shouldn't be confusing if you reread the posts. He can plug and play. Or he can spend the money most of us have to get the most out of our money.

To be honest Bads, you sound confusing, and you need to read as well. I said I like drummer, I actually have talked to him extensively. I just am warry of a man who IS SELLING something, and what he would say, SO I DID research, I said nothing about his product, I was going to get one my self, but then I was just worried what else might someone say? ~read
And you did contradict your self and pretty much defeated your self, thanks.

Look, you can run a stock emc, thats fine, in fact that is what I have, the thing is, even when you change the exhaust and the intake, your ecm, can learn and adjust a little, but you need to either take to someone who can tune it properly, or learn to use ecmspy. When you change the amount of flow in either direction, in or out, you adjust more then just air, so you need to let the computer running the whole operation know and adjust that to handle the changes and get what you paid for with the best enhancement.

Good luck.
Alex

Kevin told me that you could run a Drummer with a high flow filter and the stock ECM and be fine. That's what I'm currently running. No problems what so ever, bike runs like a champ!

Defeated myself??? Ok.... I guess when I reread. It doesn't seem confusing.

the stock ecm and filter or race ecm and filter, or just the filter and just the ecm is fine with the Drummer, I can't say about any other exhaust, nor would I but when I talk about mine, the stock ecm is great, its on my racebike and it fuels just fine.....ran all kinds of octane with no problems, season and a half...my streetbike has a stock ecm, xb12 with protype exhaust, not what I sell, it will run on all different octanes as well with no ill effects, I can build a different muffler and sell and tell you that it needs to be tuned, but then I didn't do my job, its my passion as a Buell owner to build you a good product that works but doesn't require you to empty your wallet...so if your wallet is fat, then buy a complete fat headered, long tube system that requires to be tuned for an extra sum, and you then will be at the same place with it but a thinner wallet...buy what is appealing to your liking and needs, but if you want the Drummer, call me and the stock ecm will be fine, if you are not comfortable with that, then by all means have it retuned to suit your worries.....
